Hi....I am a fairly experienced guitarist in the UK...with a love of Surf (and 50s R & R)Guitar Instrumentals...which as you can imagine never really caught on in the UK....due,I think, to our summer being only 3 weeks long.Because of this it is almost impossible to get CDs,music books etc etc.

Can anyone help ??can you recomend any publications out there which cover the subject in some detail, tecniques etc even with full blown solos thrown in would be great.

Accompanying CD/DVD.......even better!!!

As I say it doesnt not have to be aimed at a novice guitarist.

ISBN number would be great help as well.

Thanks Lads

First, welcome to the site. In future, try naming your posts more descriptively.

The Atlantics have song/tab books (see their website).
Dick Dale has a tab book (try Amazon).
There are several Hal Leonard tab books with surf music in them. (Amazon)
If you look on eBay you can get Japanese books/CD's for Ventures tunes (fully transcribed and backing tracks).
I thought the UK was swimming in Shadows books and CD backing tracks.

Yeah, me neither. I think us Brits view them in a different light. They have a kind of over clean-cut goody-two-shoes middle-class aura to them here - which seems to me to be reflected in the music. Meanwhile, the the US stuff had more of an edge to it.

This has only been re-enforced in subsequent years by association with 'Sir' Cliff's saintliness and Hank being the most famous Jehovah's Witness since Michael Jackson. Compare and contrast with Dick Dale for example ....

What part of the UK are you from? I'm South Coast.

There's nothing square about Man of Mystery, Gonzales, or The Savage. Twisted Evil

Don't make me get Ivan involved here. Cool

TBF I did quite liked Man of Mystery,FBI and Fingel Bunt(????)but generally no not one of my favorite groups.

Where am I from?originally Essex ...quite amused by the guy from Southend (Kursall and all that) saying he was from the Thames Delta never heard it called that before .

I now live in Newquay,Cornwall the SURF capital of UK....cept the waves only reach 4 feet or more about 3 times a decade...oh well!!!!

I have the Ventures DVD and it is quite good. Lee is an interesting guide through the songs.

I think the real question is, who knows why the hell it's in this thread?

That was excessively violent and completely unnecessary. I loved it.

Maybe because Beavis and Butthead never drank Cool-aid?

I've been waiting for chance to hook this one up, it's a weak excuse admittedly but isn't a doctored image at all - just how it appeared on the show.

A fellow moderator on The Rickenbacker Resourse Forum has an excellent site for downloading tab and backing Tracks for Hank Marvin/Shadows..a wealth of knowledge here

Thanks for pointing this DVD out. I got a copy off e-bay. For us folks in North America my understanding is that the disc is in PAL format. It wouldn’t play on my older laptop but works fine on my newer computer. I haven’t tried it on a DVD player, it might not work.

I got it specifically for “Walk Don’t Run”, so that’s the only lesson I’ve looked at. In summary, it walks you through the 1960 Ventures studio recording, with Bob Bogle on guitar, note by note. The presenter, Lee Hodgson, comes across as unpretentious, friendly and really interested in the song. He sticks to how he thinks Bob Bogle played it.

To really benefit from the lesson you need to have the 1960 Ventures recording completely in your head. I didn't see a tab or notation to follow so if you’re not familiar with the structure of the recording you might get lost. He describes differences in how the parts are played throughout the song and talks about how the rhythm changes from straight time to a shuffle feel in the B part. It’s a microscopic analysis of how that recording was played, including mistakes, extra and missed notes.

If you already know how to play the song but are wondering what Bob Bogle was doing and how to make some of those sounds this is for you. It answered lots of my questions.
