How do people handle playing in more than one band? Do you have your own internal pecking order for your performance situations? In the one band that I play in, it seems clear, everyones "other band" takes presedence even though we have had a good run of well paying gigs. The quality of musicianship has erroded on material we used to play so well. I was in three bands in the 90's while I was in my 30's but as a cover band, they all played the same material. I also had to use a calendar to keep stuff straight. I'm getting tired of teaching surf rock songs for fill-in musicians because of the other bands scheduling conflicts.

What day is Surf Rock's birthday? Looks like Surf Rock and I was born the same year. Maybe we are both Libras?

Interesting that you bring this up as I am going through this right now. I play as a duo with a 22 year old female singer/songwriter that we were doing great for the last year doing cover songs, great voice, but now she has decided to branch out and started a different band doing originals. We haven't communicated, practiced or played in over a month. Her focus has shifted, I realize that you can't stop someone from wanting to become better, so I just accept it and move on. She is young, but she made a big mistake by soliciting to play at a gig while we were playing there behind my back for her new group last time we played there. It's a tough one that your asking here as I think you just have to work around their egos and let be.

My thought lately is this:
- Can I join someone elses band?

Only if it makes you happy.

This happened in my band as well. And I don't blame anybody for losing interest as I did as well. Just on paper which would you choose; playing in a band that limits what you can play due to traditional standards or playing in a band that allows you to play in a style more of your choosing. 60s instrumental music is limiting, it really hit our bassist and drummer badly. Granted we have sort of branched off, but damage done.

Why would she want to be in a cover band duo when she could be in a band playing originals? And there is nothing wrong with networking for a gig with her other band while your band is playing.

I play in a couple of bands and do fill in work for a couple more. Most of the people I play with have at least one other project going. It usually works just fine. You just have to communicate, be organized and not be jealous. To limit perceived conflict of interest it is usually best if you're only soliciting gigs for one band at a time. It's kept me very satisfied, musically, and both of my bands have been together for more than a decade now.

JP, With each band, how many times a week do you practice? I know that most good musicians have more than one situ. The reason I'm letting-off steam about this is because I expect everyone to know the songs, especially for gigs, and realistic expectations of time needed for each band. Funny too is that no one in my band subscribes to any of the surf rock sites. Do you think their ears are burning?

Bill it sounds like you need to either recalibrate your bandmates with your expectations or find new ones.

It all depends. We all have jobs, houses, some have families etc. We gig 1-4 times a month depending on what time of year it is (we don't like to drive around in January and February if we can help it). Usually we rehearse once a week, if we have a lot of gigs then maybe once a month or less. I attribute flexibility and realistic expectations, in part, to our longevity.

Belonging to a surf rock site or even "being part of the scene" isn't inherent in being a good band member or even a good musician. You are obviously VERY enthusiastic about the band and your music, that's awesome, but you can't expect that everyone in your band is going to feel the same way. As adults we have varying interests and desires. Playing music and being in a band fulfills different needs in different people. If anything, putting undue pressure or expectations on your bandmates is going to push them farther away from your vision.

I would suggest simply getting together with them individually or as a whole and asking what they're looking to get out of the band, where they want to go with it etc and then adjusting your gameplan to meet everyone's needs as best as you can.

Otherwise, get new guys.

That isn't funny. They obviously enjoy, but don't have a passion for surf music.

I'm pretty fortunate. Our drummer & bass player are full-time pros and both have other bands and do fill-ins. We all have a passion for Surf music, and since they have connections, I get to play my wife-imposed limit of gigs.
Once a commitment is made to a particular gig or band, you are obligated to honor it. Our drummer once cancelled on a gig that I had booked 2 days before the event for a gig that paid $25.00 more, and didn't offer to help find a fill-in. I got one-and he became our permanent drummer. I now believe in Karma because the gig he took was rained out-no pay, and we made about 40 bucks each in tips and got food and drinks.

Brian: I agree. These threads I started are me thinking aloud about what I really need to do.... get my self in a situ with like-minded people.

Great advice JP. Generally all members of a band aren't going to be as into the genre, scene, whatever as the leader is. As long as they are professional and they deliver, I'm happy.

I'm in three bands right now, and I'm really digging it.

I used to be in one band only, a surf band, we'd try to rehearse once a week, we'd maybe play one or two shows a month. I'd get frustrated if we weren't playing enough, or if we weren't playing a particular song, and then things got wacky over a recording...

In the meantime, I was invited to join another band, which was great, but we play maybe 10 to 12 shows a year.

Then some people I was jamming with became a third band, and we played an initial flurry of shows before settling down to now playing maybe 6 shows a year, largely 'cause of the amount of time one of our bandmates can devote to it-- both of them are also in other bands (more than one, even).

Meanwhile, I quit the first band, largely because it stopped being fun any more-- the fact I had other projects on-the-go made it easier to understand that it was time to move on. At that point, it was back to two bands, playing maybe 1 or 2 shows a month.

A few months later, the drummer in one of the bands asked me if I was interested in joining another band that he was starting (he's in at least three bands, two of them with me), which was not surf but a garage band, more music I love to play, so I'm back to being in three bands.

The garage band is the most rehearsed and gig-ready at any give time, because we try to get together once a week to work on material, but as far as the other two bands go, we have a couple of sets worked up and it takes no more than one or two rehearsals (on top of individual homework) to get the songs gig-ready again.

Anyway, this keeps me busy enough either learning new material, writing new tunes, playing shows, and recording. Every now & again it gets a bit tight, timewise (I've also got a family and a responsible day job, and also take lessons every two weeks), but most of the time, it all works out and it's great fun.

As far as loyalty issues go, everybody is in other bands so nobody can get too jealous or possessive or anything like that. We get together when we want to get get together, and everybody seems reasonably happy about it. Similarly, songs get written or shows come up, and who-gets-it depends on all sorts of things, from the style of the song or type of show, to who had the last money gig, etc. It seems to work out and nobody gets their noses out of joint.
