And as you know, it's just plain cool playing a guitar that's older than yourself.

Indeed, my Supro Belmont is more than twice as old as I am.

The second neck screw is neck tilt adjustment, not intonation, btw.

D'oh! That's what I was trying to say; what I really had in mind was action, not intonation. Not only was the neck tilting messed up, but the lateral alignment, too. With only one screw holding the neck on, the thing was actually free to pivot. Not hard to see why _that _feature didn't catch on.

I like the overall feel of the Dual Tone, and I don't mind the frets. But after the SGV or the Dano, I'm always conscious of the need to shove my hand up and down the Supro's neck. With the Hodad, I never give it a thought. Perhaps those slender necks have spoiled me, but yeah, the Supro neck is a little chunky for my taste. I adapt to it alright if I leave the other guitars alone for long enough, but it seems everything on a Hodad is exactly the right size and in exactly the right place for me.

In the end it's all rather moot, as I display the grace of an ox on any guitar. The sound of those pickups and the knowledge that they've been on there for 50 years makes me willing to overlook this guitar's foibles. And of course there remains my original reason for lusting after a Dual Tone in the first place -- I'm pretty sure you know what that was! Smile

I wouldn't call the neck slow. I don't play as well on the Supro as I do on my other guitars, but that is probably because I am not use to it. The nut width is thinner and the neck's depth is thicker. So it just feels odd coming off of playing my other stuff. I have no problem with the frets.

Can't beat how those guitars sound though. That's for sure.

I've got the same guitar and had the same problem with the neck moving laterally. Zak spent some time in chat with me, giving me tips on setting it up. He's your man if you need help with that.

Surfin_bird: You made the right choice with that Yamaha SG-12. What a beauty!

JetBlue: Agreed, Zak's the first guy I'd call with a Supro problem. I was out-of-country with little or no internet access when I first got my hands on this guitar. When I started messing with it, the bridge fell off and the neck was all over Christendom. First impression: Great, a guitar held together by it's f*ckin' strings! Seems fine now, though, knock on wood.

MissingLink
the bridge fell off and the neck was all over Christendom.

That was an amazing sentence. One of my favorites ever, I have to start using the "all over Christendom" line. Brilliant.

For you, I'll waive the royalties.

Looking at them all together, it's a real mess...

The cousins:

my first guitar, and the guitar that led me here: Aria Diamond (1532T), '69-'70, made in Japan by Matsumoku;
Vantage VS-600 bass, made in Japan by Matsumoku;
Vantage 111T, made in Korea, not by Matsumoku.

The siblings:
imageimage
Spitzenreiter (house brand) R1, my second guitar, hollow-body plexiglass made from a Harmony--apart from the case, the best parts of this are the Harmony pickups;
Spitzenreiter W, walnut, made with parts I bought because I thought they looked cool;

And the rest:
imageimageimage
Charvette, came free with case with GR-33 synth, great colour (fluorescent red), great playability;
Epiphone Custom Shop Firebird, supposedly with neck-through construction, because I wanted one;
Ampeg Amg100, bought new(!) because it was on sale and because I wanted one.

Geez, look at all the humbuckers.

Amps, not so much...

RK

I like the Spitzenreiter W. To me, it looks like a shark, and you plug in through the mouth.

And you can twist its eyeballs around in their sockets.

man, these threads always make me jealous of other people's gear.

Yeah, there's some bitchin' guitars on here! Here's a few of mine:

1972 or 1973 Tele Thinline. Not a reissue. Not geeky enough to know what year it actually is.

image

Gretsch Sierra Jolly Rancher something. Bought it in 2004.

image

Epiphone Sheraton II. Got it in 2004 off eBay. No idea of the year. I have the other sunburst version as well.

Here's a real oddity, a 1966 Vox Bulldog. Made in Italy by EKO. Supposedly they actually licensed the body shape from Mosrite.
The amp is a 1964 Gretsch, made by Valco. It's got a huge tone and killer tremolo!
