El Papu & los Fantasticos Reverberantes

"The role of Zak is now being played by Jake Dobner."

HA! I thought the same thing.

Hey wait, maybe Zak and Jake are the same person!!!!

Has anyone ever seen them both at the same time?

...or maybe Jake is channeling Zak.

I've been pissing on mediocre surf music for some time And pissing upon those who think surf is the be all end all of music. No genre is, that is what makes music so great. And... surf music is not complex.

That's a good crotchety old man post, but points off for forgetting "since you were in short pants" and "uphill both ways."

Bold prediction: This is the first thread that's going to lose "Best of SG101" status and get demoted back into General Discussion.

That was excessively violent and completely unnecessary. I loved it.

I think by complex they are referring to bands like Slacktone and The Madeira.. who both probably would not be classified as surf.

Question Question Question
Evil

Surf music does not have to be simple - just because, say, Penetration and Baja are simple, does not mean that the Atlantics' Bombora or The Crusher is not surf. For me, "Ventures in Space" is a surf album - and definitely not simple.

Hey Ivan.. I did not want to insult you.. sorry. I mean a lot of bands do not want to be classified as surf. Not arguing that you or other bands do not belong to the genre.

Love The Madeira actually!

I personally embrace the surf tag. I play surf music - and I'm proud of it! Almost all of the direct influences that I have are from surf music. Yeah, I'm trying to do something different with it, but hopefully not different enough that it wouldn't be recognized as being part of the same genre, though I know that some people would think so. That's their problem. Anyway, thanks for the clarification, Matt!

OOOPS!! I forgot a couple of words... --> "I think by complex they are referring to bands like Slacktone and The Madeira.. who both probably would not WANT TO be classified as surf."

I guess I was making an assumption haha. I was wrong, I have been wrong and I will be wrong again.

I agree that surf/instro music is not that complex.

It does need a little attention to remember the arrangement of songs.

I like the fact that I can pitch "Surf Rock" to club owners. They like the idea of not-so-loud music and a down-the-shore vibe instead of ground glass vocals about how your baby did you wrong, again. This year has been pretty successful so far.

I don't like the hubris I get from "Professional Musicians" (most rock and blues guys in Central NJ) when I'm looking to for a fill-in even if I can match or exceed their minimum $ amount.

What day is Surf Rock's birthday? Looks like Surf Rock and I was born the same year. Maybe we are both Libras?

It's a dirty job but somebody has to do it! Quick Jake...post something negative about beam blockers so I can argue with you!

I LOVE the guitars, when it's done well, the musicianship puts other genres (except maybe jazz) to shame. The guitars don't hide behind a 2 foot thick wall of distortion to hide the fact that the person holding it can't play.

I love Surf music...that being said I could think of several genres (including some with a 2 foot thick wall of distortion) that demonstrate more "musicianship".

Thunderhead
Simple, Surf Music has Lots of Guitar!!!!!! Very Happy

And you can hear it, too, and I love the sound qualities and techniques and melodies like the initial posters said, but I was going to say that I also like it because (some) Surf Music has Lots of Sax!!! Often good sax, too, and sometimes excellent.

I've never used them because I think they would be a waste of energy to put in to try out. Personally not a big fan of standing in front of my amp.

One word-MELODY.
That's why I prefer the early Ventures with Bogle on lead. Nokie is a better guitar played, but I think his embellishments obscure the melody. Findicator likes pitching the lower volume level without vocals blasting from the PA, but it's hard to beat the sound of a Showman at full-tilt!

One word-MELODY.

I think that's what it's really about. I'd rather listen to good melodies than senseless noodling and unmemorable displays of superior musicality...and I like that there's lots of guitar too!

we were at a local eatery the other day and the music they were playing was nothing but senseless noodling and lacked any melody (never mind who it was but it's someone considered to be a great musician)......i almost went to my car to get a surf mix cd and ask them if they'd play it but the waitress beat me to it and put on something equally as annoying but a different genre. Very Happy
