I recently bought a pearl white Excellent 65 from the last stock of the US importer. Really nice guitar although I don't think I'll be using it in the Surfites but rather for one of our other band projects, The Moon-Bugs. The pearl white finish creates a pretty cool pearl lustre effect. This will be my only guitar stringed with roundwounds.

That is a cool looking guitar, Klas. Do The Moon-Bugs have anything recorded?

Do The Moon-Bugs have anything recorded?

No recordings yet. It's a project we plan to start up sometime in the future. Should sound like our take on the Ventures In Space or Marketts Out Of Limits album styles. All original songs of course.

I almost got that exact same guitar a couple weeks ago, but lost it last-minute on ebay.

Very cool. I'll be waiting for that one for sure!

she's a beauty

As the pic above shows, my guitar is pearl white with a red tortoise pickguard. Anyone know if this combination was available on Mosrite guitars in the 60s? The typical pickguard for a pearl white Mosrite back then was black as seen on this modern day photo of Yuzo Kayama's guitar (which btw was given to him by the Ventures in 1965).

congratulations on your acquisition! i just got a japan mosrite super excellent 65 in metallic blue with matching neck/headstock and vibramute bridge about a week ago. i believe it's from the same people you got yours from.

how does yours deal with returning to pitch after bends, klas? mine i have to yank back up on the bar before it hits proper pitch again, even with really subtle bends. i've played some of the earlier reissues with the moseley type trem that weren't plagued with this problem as badly as mine. i'm going to attempt to find a stiffer, longer spring .

the pots i found are incredibly cheap and have a horribly useless taper. those and the switch are getting switched out as soon as possible, but this isn't a gripe of mine, it'll be my first experience with dealing with a guitar's electronics.

I had tuning problems using the tremolo during the first couple of days but not anymore. However, I have to tune the G string a bit flat and then press the trem to "secure" the string in the correct pitch. If not doing that procedure, it will immidietly go sharp when using the trem.

Yeah, mine too. At least the tone pot. Nothing happens until the last 10% of the range when turning down the tone.

What about the small fret dots on the side of your guitar's neck? The person who placed out the dots on my guitar must have been drunk!

Overall I think my guitar looks, plays and sounds great though.

hahaha! yeah, there are two dots on the side binding that are pretty out of place. but that i think i can deal with!

my trem has gotten 'used' to the guitar a bit. the guitar itself needs a setup so badly . i plan on doing it myself with a knowledgeable friend. the only part that sucks is that the truss rod access is under the pickguard, not at the headstock end like my celebrity.

I forgot mentioning that I think the tremolo sounds great. I can now get those deep dives heard on many Ventures and eleki records which is simply not possible with my Jag or JM.

I'm waiting for mine in the post - most excited. I'll probably show her off when she arrives! It's a white Excellent with a black pickguard.
