Permalink 4ohm vs. 8ohm Showman

New Topic

I'm looking for a Showman (or maybe Bassman...see other thread) head for our bass player. We've found a couple heads locally but they are both 8ohm single Showmen. I'm asking for your input and opinions on the advantages and/or disadvantages of 4 or 8ohms for bass use.

The main 4ohm advantage right now is that I have a 4ohm Dual Showman cab he could use. But, I'm open to suggestions.

ps...I know there is some allowable mismatch. But, for now, let's say we'd like to start without a mismatch.
Thanks!

Depending on how good a price you get, you can always switch the output tranny on the single showman to match the 4 ohm load. You can even get a multi tap and put in a switch for either one.

Hey Danny...that's an interesting idea. Is it just a case of swapping output xfmrs? or is anything else involved?

Alternatively, I guess we could use a pair of 16ohm speakers in parallel and make it a 8ohm total load.

So then, would it be correct to say that neither 4 or 8 ohm is "better" than the other...it's just that the 8 was intended for use with a single speaker?

Or get new speakers that you can wire up to make 8ohms. Speakers more specific for bass might be a good thing. Woody uses the 400w Electro Voice speakers for his bass playing.

Also,

A 4ohm output transformer may be lurking in the "single" Showman chassis. There are no 8ohm showman in the "double" chassis, but there are 4ohmers in the "single" showman chassis. These are very rare from the anecdotal evidence that I've heard of.
