Permalink playing bass in a surf band

there are a few powerful fingerstyle bass guys in surf...Sam Bolle comes to mind most readily...his part on "Bells of St. Kahuna"is wicked good...especially when he gets on that high E note and drives it with the two-finger 8th-note and 16th-note attack....

power!

I'm not a bass virtuoso by any stretch of the imagination, but I have been playing bass in a surf band for 15 years. I pride myself in being a very meat and potatoes kind of player. My advice is to use your fingers as much as possible to get a nice fat tone - if you need more attack then simply pluck a little harder. Picks are cool and can be used to great effect, but change it up as much as possible. Learn to walk through the changes without being overly busy, work to enhance the kick/snare syncopation and don't step on the lead guitarists toes. Bass is a support instrument. Keep it cool and greasy. Check out the bass on the Ventures records, Duck Dunn on Stax (Booker T, etc) and Mary Huff from S.C.O.T.S. (especially their later records where she really shines).
