I'm going to be stripping and painting a strat body over the next month. I want to paint it white. I'm thinking of taking it to a local rod shop to paint it. Is there a specific paint like say nitro cellulose or other automotive paint that would work well? Where can I find it? The body wood is ash.

Speaking of scary, that reminds me of an article I saw in Guitar Player long long ago: The guitarist from Ratt or Cinderella or one of those bands was explaining how he has this setup where he hangs a guitar over about three packs worth of burning cigarettes to age the finish. Ick.

We did this discussion when one of The Penetrators wanted to refinish an axe. If you want a true, vintage paint job, you have to do NitroCellulose Lacquer, which auto shops can't do. They shoot urethane or enamel or some other crap, which is like wrapping a guitar in a condom. Extra thick condom.
Guitar ReRanch sells nitro in true Fender colors and has a lot of advice on how to get the best paint job. Shooting nitro is a lot of work and not environmentally friendly, but you get a really thin paint coat, a mirror finish when done right, and the mojo of having a paint that will check, crack and fade just like the old guitars.
Google "Guitar ReRanch" if you want to find out more. I have painted four guitars with their stuff, and they are all beautiful and soulful.

I second the Guitar Reranch
Most modern automotive lacquers are acrylic lacquers. Acrylic lacquer has been used successfully for guitars, but Nitrocellulose lacquer will buff to a much nicer gloss because it dries considerably harder than acrylic.

Bots,
One nice thing, especially if you're thinking Olympic White, is that with most whites DON'T need clear coats over the finish. I just re-finned my Bronco last summer and it came out beautiful w/o any clear coats!
Saves on time and materials.
