just got my AV jazzmaster from a local guitar store and have some problems: when i got home there was a good sized dent in the bottom of the neck, when i put it on layaway this past monday the dent wasnt there. im not bothered by it too much but if im going to shell out for a new AV jazzy it better be perfect. other thing is: i dont totally understand the circut thing (link with explanation anyone?) but when the cicut switch is in the down position there is a loud buzz in all positions even when fingers are on the strings although that makes it alittle quieter, which leads me to believe theres a grounding problem or a noisy volume pot. anyone know if this is just standard with the jazzmaster down circut? im slightly dissapointed although it does sound/play great not taking into consideration the buzzing.

I'd definitely make an issue with the store, about the dent. Take it back and if they don't offer you a discount, tell them to order you another one.

About the buzzing. Try it in another room or at another house/location. Typical causes of excessive buzzing are dimmer switches and flourescent fixtures. Also try a different instrument cable.

When you say the down position do you mean the bridge pickup only? Usually the up or down position causes a little more buzzing than the middle position. If you're referring to the rhythm/lead circuit switch that's a different story. Down on that means the lead circuit is on. Is there buzzing no matter where the lead circuit toggle switch is?

yea theres a little more buzzing with the pup selector but the buzzing is much more prevalent in the lead circut

If you are indeed talking about the circuit switch (on the upper bout), then when you put it down then the rhythm circuit is engaged. This means your neck pickup is on all by itself. It is normal for it to be a bit noiser because it's sister bridge pickup is not on to provide some hum cancelling.

Put the circuit switch up, and then flip the toggle switch up. It should buzz about maybe the same.

oh no, when the switch is UP its the neck pup only and upper bout controls only, but then when its down you can select pups and the tone is a little less mellow. thats where the buzzing is

Oh yeah, sorry I got those mixed up.

when I got my jag ( not brand new though) it buzzed like hell, suffered volume fade in and fade out, and then suffered grinding halt alltogether. I checked EVERYTHING, for wire-breaks and what have you. End the end turned out to be a dirty volume pot. (only in the lead circuit, understandable aonce I found the issue). a bit of contact-cleaner and twenty turns and it was perfect.

you got it from a store right? take it back and confront them, was the buzzing there when you tried it?

something else, Ifound at home there's a very strong reaction between my tanks and my amps too, have to keep them well apart or else there's noise like crazy.

No buzzing or any other issues with my AV Jazzmaster at all.

well i brought it in and im very happy, when i played at the store the lead circ buzz was barely noticable and i think what happened at home was a combination of moving my amp closer to my computer and a bad cable. he gave me 2 free setups a couple sets of flats and 130 bucks back. the dent is in a pretty low key spot and not noticable playing, and now that i realize the electronics arent a problem im happy as can be with my 1150 AV jazzmaster! its absolutly beautiful, and sounds fantastic, ill load a file or two up tomorrow what site do you guys use to host recordings?

Since the Reissue Jazzmasters feature reverse-polarity pickups, when in the lead-circuit (upper bout switch down), and with both pickups on (middle position on lower bout pickup switch) you're in total humbucking mode, and buzz should be virtually non-existent.

Even my original L-series Jazzmaster never buzzed, now that I think about it. If after repositioning your amp, effects, etc, you're still catching that buzz in the both-pickups-on position, there may well be something goofed up in the ciruitry, and maybe it could be a grounding issue. If the noise continues, I'd definitely want to have a guitar tech look at it.

and a bad cable.

AHA! easily 50% of all guitar noise problems are the cable, no?
