Permalink Danelectro Dead On '67

I played the Danelectro Dead On '67 at Guitar Center today. I don't know why they call it a "Dead On", 'cause it's not a dead on copy of the Coral Hornet. It's similar, but not at all dead on. Never-the-less, it has very nice tones from two lipstick pick-ups, a flat radius neck with a fairly narrow profile, very light weight surf guitar type body, a questionable whammy and a wood bridge. Intonation is good and even with the wood bridge, it still sustains fairly well. I had trouble keeping it in tune after string bends and whammy thrusts but that may have been due to new strings. It looks better in person than it does on the Dano website. GC price is 350-. I didn't buy one. Guitar

"Hello Girls!"

In guitar shops they mostly ahave thin strings on the guitars.
Any more eyperiences and thoughts about those nice looking Hornet copies?
I like the butterscotch colour!

Once played a Dano U2 reissue from Korea from the 90s. Great guitar!!! Very easy to play. I played it live for a few gigs. But I missed the vibrato! And you couldnt play beyond the 15th fret...
The wood bridge made a good sound. Had no problems with it!

Its Basswood, and is ultra lightweight, But is very soft. Don't tighten screws to much.....

I am not sure what finish is on these, but it could get thrashed quickly.

Peace to you, not on you

I've got a 1998 Dano U2 Baritone and it has been a Great Guitar. It retains all the great qualities that made Dano Great to begin with, Cool features,Cool Tones, Cool Colors and they are Affordable!!! Can't wait to try the new ones.

I am probably going to buy one to serve as a backup if either me or the other dude breaks a string on stage. My crappy 90s U-2 reissue has filled that role lately. I must say it has done a fair job. This will be a step-up for only a little cash.

Hello, im about to buy the dead on 67 baritone. Did anyone try it? Any experiences? thank you

I played one of these the other day. I thought they looked great; better than I expected after seeing the pictures online.

I got to see Red, and Black in person. The Red looked pretty good, but I'm betting that Butterscotch, Orange, and especially Limey will look better. (the pickguard looks especially nice in person)

As far as how they play, I somewhat enjoyed playing it, but the whole reason I was looking at these was for the vibrato. I didn't like that aspect of it at all. It seemed both stiff, and flimsy at the same time. I'm going to stay with my '63 reissue instead, and pass on this one.

This is my one, 56 U2 Reissue...it's from 8 years ago more or less, and just have 1 thing that i don't like:

-Strap button (?...sorry i'm spanish) to drop the guitar is too much easy to remove it accidently

3 or 4 years ago, in new 56 reissues, are metallic and not removable!!!...

Sounds increible for a 350€ guitar!!!!..Danelectro is one of my favourites guitars of all the times!

Diggey: You are right, Basswood is ultra-soft. My old Jag-Stang had a basswood body.. relatively lightweight, but it dinged up worse than any other guitar I have owned over the years.

Yep, thats B-asswood.

Scares me on a Dano, as they are not the most solid of guitars. (From my experience.) The pickups are rad. But, my run ins have been less then stellar.

Peace to you, not on you

In addition to these Dead On models.. how do you feel about the 1990's and 2000 reissues they have put out? Worth spending a couple hundred on a used U-2 just to mess with?

zak: I guess I was looking for a cheap thrill. Smile "F" it. I will just save my money for something else.

I have a baritone in the Limey finish. It looks good, plays good and sounds good. It is a very fun guitar. It captures the feel and tone of the vintage ones. No Danelectro feels quality like a Gibson, but for what they are, I am very happy. Loving the baritone.

Bump...any more opinions on this guitar. I love the lowest tones of my MIM strat (my first and only electric) most but have been only playing guitar for a little more than a year. Would this be an economical way to check out if bari is right for me? Know of a used one for sale? The sub sonic strat seems cool but I gotta have a vibrato arm. And the pickup issue sounds less than ideal for surf. One full octave down seems too low so a fourth down that can also go a fifth down seems good to me. All opinions appreciated, John.

I've got the dead on bari and love it. I put flats on it. Mine's tuned to A.

You can here it kick in at the second verse here:
