Permalink Gear? OT? The Del Tones in the Beach Party movies guitars?

New Topic

Okay, in Beach Party it looked like all the Del Tones were playing Fender stuff that faded from white to blue and Dick was playing a white guitar.

Did I see that wrong?

If so what was that color combo?

I know in a later follow up movie they all had Lake Placid Blue and Dick had his gold guitar, so maybe I am nuts.

Anybody ever see this before?

Looking at the trailer on YouTube, I'm seeing Dick playing a left-handed white Strat with what appears to be a tortoise-shell pick guard. Go to 1:29 . . .

It takes a lot of mussel memory to avoid clams.

I got the DVD and paused it...

Dick is playing a pearl white Strat with a tort guard.

I did not know they did pearl white back then, but in the pic I am 100% that it is a pearl.

The band have a Jazzmaster, Strat, and P Bass and they are fogged looking.

They go from a light silver/blue or light pearl blue/white to a bright almost LPB color on the edges.

All of them have white guards and pick ups except the bass, it has the usual black pickguard and black thumb rest.

Neat finishes...those were never been offered to the public were they?

I just looked at the second Beach film DVD (BTW, not that the Beach Films are the greatest things ever but the second one is really bad with the muscle beach muscle men) with Dick Dale in it and he is playing the gold strat in it and interestingly his band is all playing regular Lake Placid Blue stuff in this one.

Odd that the fogged/fade ones are gone in the second movie.

It's the same strat. Dick had the white one painted to gold.

Not so fast. There are lots of photos of Dick playing that white guitar, I'm pretty certain it is plain ole Olympic white. That's video is pretty low resolution to show a pearl finish. They may have coated the guitars to cut down glare or reflections for filming under bright lights, that is very common even. Maybe Ivan will resolve when he returns from Europe, he knows all about the beast.
