I have now loaded in the videos I shot at THE STARTING GATE of all the bands - one song each; except for THE VERBTONES and THE GHASTLY ONES -- 2 songs each. I did not shoot any of the jams, regretably, as I was struggling with staying fully awake after only 2 hours of sleep. But I got great pix, they will be ready soon in a FLICKR file...stay tuned.
I have stacked the videos in 4 open windows -- I suspect they will begin to finish processing overnight. Once all these are in, then the videos taken outdoors at THE HUNTINGTON BEACH PIER (sorry Tim....calm down!) will be loaded in. The lighting at both THE PURPLE ORCHID and THE STARTING GATE were close to insufficiently lit for my l'il ol' Canon Digital, but the sound is great! Actually under the circumstances I feel they came out fine.
I also took a video of PAUL JOHNSON and GIL ORR doing my request....'CRYSTAL T', at DON THE BEACHCOMBER
Again...y'all....I had a blast in California this past weekend. Never will forget it, ever

Jeff,
Maximum kudos for putting on THE legendary weekend of savage surf music. I am still stoked, and am anxious to get back to HB next year.
Here are a few of my favorite shots I took at the surf jam. It was amazing to see some of my long-time heroes live and in person.

I'm sorry to have missed the festivities. Freddie, great pix. Who is the guy with the tele, in between the Surge and Secret Samurai? I applaud anyone with the balls to show up at a surf jam with a tele, even if it has a bigsby.

That is Miles of the TomorrowMen.
bummed you didn't make the show.
especially since you are a So. Cal. native.
Brian do you want to move this to the Gen discussion area, so maybe more people will see it.
I know many people that don't look in the show announcements area.

Thanks BTD. Looks like Miles plays a JM as well. He still gets points for the tele.
I made it last year, and will make it next year for sure. The timing this weekend was kind of a mess for me, unfortunately.

Wow, I'm having a great time reading this thread, looking at the pics and reading what other people saw and thought from their perspectives.
I got back home late last night and have a pile of things to do including posting some pics and vids that my wife got.
I can't say enough good things about Jeff and his crew of helpers. Big thanks to Matt Q for the amps and gear. The drum head with Duff's logo on it was out of sight! Tiki Tena for promoting the event on myspace and facebook. All the vendors and the Starting Gate.
I'll post some more later with some mini-reports on each day of the high speed weekend.

well I got a report that the mic on stage left was much clearer than the one I was on, ...
Yeah. I think you were using the bass guitarist's mic.

i'm good for little bits here and there as i go over the weekend in my mind. so i'll start with the reventlos at the pier on sunday. they ROCKED. they played all my favorite instrumentals from their cd's (best to me was 'reventlo hayride') and threw in a few vocals to mix it up along with a lot of talking to the audience, and the audience was listening. i looked around while they were playing and the railing on the pier was lined with onlookers. my 18 year old son also really liked them. he was getting ready to wander around and stayed put through their whole set, waiting for more.
the outdoor stage at the beach is a great setting for live music. the weather was perfect and it seemed to me that there were a lot more onlookers this year than last year (i could be wrong)
the surge from atlanta played all three days........friday night at the purple orchid, saturday at the convention and sunday at the pier........and did not disappoint with their tradition surf sound. you could tell they were having fun and were grateful for the love they were getting from onlookers. i heard a lot of people around me at all three shows talking about how much they liked what they were hearing. i have to say the couple of tunes by the astronauts were my favs, with guest guitarist woodyj keeping it pure with the three guitars.
the verbtones started off the surfin' sundays at the pier with a great set. kyle has great stage presence. a lot of people stopped and listened closely to their cover of the beatles 'please, please, me'. i think even non-beatles fans could appreciated what they do to that tune. i really liked another tune they did but can't remember the name of it (i think it was a cover of a duke ellington tune? or maybe i just imagined it?) great meeting and talking to kyle and his wife marie.
i was looking forward to hearing the eliminators with jon blair. they did one of my favorite jon and the nightriders tunes 'moving target', so i'm most happy to have heard it live. it was so cool to see bob spickard of the chantays as special guest on 'pipeline'. i spoke to him for a while at the convention and all i can say is what a nice, unassuming person he is....
and last but not least the glasgow tiki shakers. their set got better and better with each tune. what an amazing amount of sound out of three people. i have to say 'intoxica' was probably my favorite tune of theirs. we spoke at length at don the beachcomber that evening as we watched the duo-tones (such nice people)
okay, i gotta get back to work and don't have time to read over this so i hope it makes sense. more later on the duo-tones and the convention.
whew..........what time zone am i in??

You're welcome. I meant to go over and try your guitar, but I never made it.
Mom does shoegaze surf.
All kinds of mouths were dropping at how good The Surge! were.

You were great, don't sweat it.
I didn't really have any nerves, short of forgetting how to make a Bm 30 minutes before going on.
Of course, I didn't know Dave Wronski was in the crowd. Mighta been a different story, then.
