I bought it about two weeks ago now and I think it is a very good pedal. I could say I am able to get sounds ranging from the Shadows, to Atlantics, to Penetrators but lets be honest I'm not patient enough to dial in the right sound or try to learn those songs.
Although the pedal is digital I can't hear any digitalness which I can hear in almost all other digital pedals. They purposefully altered the sound of the unit to give it the imperfections of the Space Echo if you wish to call them imperfections. You can hear the slight tape flutter that the original would have made. The tap tempo is pretty great as well.
I haven't begun to try out all the different tape head combinations. There are only 11 but as I said I have no patience so I found the first one i really liked and sat on that. With the different tape head combinations you can really find the specific delay you are looking for.
I've never played an original Space Echo and have been resigned to hearing them on record so I cannot compare the original and Boss pedal. I've never played any of the boss digital delays so i cannot compare those either, but an analog delays obviously has nothing on this pedal although the slap back is better from an analog pedal. The slap back is better than a Red Repeat however, which claims to be an analog pedal.
Great pedal with a ton of combinations.

I've never even come close to having the chance to test out a real tape echo. I'd love to own a real Space Echo.
Wannes, it doesn't have presets. I don't feel that it needs presets as everything is pretty set already. Tap tempo of course being very helpful towards that.
Zak, gorgeous setup. Do you have 10s or 12s in the cab? Looks a little on the small size for 12s.

A friend of mine has 2 space echoes, and they are worth every penny if you can find one. I have used it live and recording. The sound is outstanding!

I've got a RE-150 Space Echo, which is the budget echo only version. The new Boss pedal seems exciting if only because it has an interface which makes sense to me - most of the modern pedals which can replicate multi-head echos have far too many knobs for my comfort. Even if the pedal doesn't sound as good as a real tape echo, the interface is a big step over the competition.

I run it through my Super Reverb, it isn't a tank but it has a ton of reverb. Vintage Supers and Deluxe Reverbs have really great on board reverb in comparison to other amps.
For $250 I think it is worth it. Better than the DeLayla, the Boss delay series, and the DL4, although the DL4 has the best reverse delay/echo I've ever heard not manufactured in the studio. Those are the delays I've tried.
I feel Zak's word is the best on this pedal. I can't afford to buy or maintain a Space Echo, nor would I want to hassle with it live.

i'd throw down the cash for the new EHX stereo memory man with hazerai. had a chance to play it, and the looping, echo filters, presets, and reverse are quite splendid. the re-20 didn't wow me too much.
i'm an echo junkie. i've got 8 or 9 echo pedals. analog and digital. no tape echo yet.

Played this pedal a while ago but to little to really comment. I've been looking for some great echo sounds for a long time and the only thing that really has caught my attention was an old worn Echoplex that I didn't buy as it looked as if it would only last for two more hours 
It's very obvious to me that all delay/echo pedals sound more like an effect vs. real tape echoes sounding like 'instruments'.
Same thing with the Holy Grail vs. a tube driven tank, I guess.
So far a 30$ Danelectro PB&J has done it for me but the RE-20 has a lot of cool options making great effects. How does it cut through massive reverb?

Well, I ponied up and got one of the RE-20s and while I haven't played it with the band yet, I'm pretty impressed. As I said above, I like the interface, so getting the sound of the RE-150 out of the RE-20 was simple.
I prefer the echo only settings (1-4) as I've got reverb covered already. 
Setting 4 is my favorite, it's the "Heads 2 & 3" setting for the galloping echo that makes multi-head units so cool.

I tried it again today. Pretty cool box. The tap and twist are great features. If I get it I'll probably end up using the echo section only.
But what's the deal with all the chorus/modulation? In some settings it's cool and barely there. In others it's way too much.
How does that work?

I did a a/b comparison between the RE-20 the Deluxe Memory Man today,
and I have to say that the Memory Man sounds much warmer and more lively. I think the reverb on Re-20 is bullshit. I wouldn't use it. So I only turn up the echo. Which modes did you use? I think Mode 2 is quite good.

My opinion has soured on this pedal. I still use it, but really only for ambient stuff or if I want a lot of noise quick(rat+DM-2+this pedal). Doesn't do what I would want it to do for lead-ish stuff.
Yeah, the reverb sucks.

Yeah, I bought on one they first came out early last year and literally sold it 2 weeks later.
It just had way too much stuff that I would never use.
