I just acquired an old traynor yvm-1

just like this one

I'm going to build a cab for it and im looking for a 15" speaker. I love surf guitar, reverb and fuzz! I will be using my ARVRI jazzmaster with this

I'm on budget any thing less than $130

here is what I'm looking at

What would you recommend on my budget?

The head is rated a 50 watts, what is the general rule with watts, should I get a 50 watt speaker or something higher?

Yeah, there'll be too much speaker break up going with just a 50watt speaker.

yes i agree with Zak those speakers are very inexpensive and relieable. and they sound great! i have 2 12" Eminence Legends on my cab and i couldnt be happier.

thanks, the speaker needs to be 4 ohms.

would an 80 watt speaker be fine? or should I look for a 100 watt. I read somewhere that if the speaker is rated to high you lose tone, is that true?

zak
That's 50 clean watts, maxed out it will be more. You'll likely blow a 50 watt speaker if you run the amp halfway up or higher.
Rule of thumb is double the wattage.

I don't disagree with that rule of thumb as far as a Surf sound goes but I think whether or not you would be likely blow it or not probably depends on the speaker.

British amps have quite a long tradition of the speakers being rated at the same wattage as the output; from the four 25w Celestion Green-backs in the old Marshall 100w 4x12 (very few people used a twin-cab stack in pubs/clubs) to the 15w blue-backs fitted in AC30s and AC15s. Some 4xEL84 30w Boutique amps have a single Vintage 30 or (my favourite) the G12H. I've personally committed heinous sins of vastly overdriving Celestions on many occasions and got away with it for years. I sometimes drive my Crate Powerblock (150w) into a cab with 2 G12Hs (60w). Maybe other brands are not so happy with it.

It definitely does make a difference in sound - it's a question of what you want. I have a AC15 Hand-wired which has a 15w blue and I also have a cabinet with a 50w Celestion Goldback in it. The Goldback is supposed to exactly replicate the tone of the blueback only at a higher wattage. However there's a noticeable difference when you start pushing the amp a bit and the blue starts to exhibit a bit of speaker distortion - which I personally like - even for recording surf type sounds - and the Gold stays a lot tidier sounding. I think that's what you meant about 'losing tone' there's a warmth you get when the speaker is working a bit hard. Of course, you may not like it.

My personal opinion is that you will be quite safe with an 80w driver of most brands on a 50w amp. Especially so if you are using cleaner sounds and therefore not driving the amp super-hard. If it were a Celestion I would say there would be zero chance of blowing it. They don't make 80w speakers, but I'd warrant a pair of their 30w ones would go on forever at 50w.

I've got a 4ohm Weber Cali 15" in great condition for $60 plus shipping. Email me if interested.
