Over the weekend I picked up the remastered version of the Bomboras' "Savage Island," Robert Drasnin's "Voodoo," the Tiki Tones' "Suburban Savage" and the Verbtones' EP.

Nah, it wasn't much of an arm twist, and I dig both of them. The Drasnin one struck me as minor-key exotica that has a bit more going on than a lot of the exotica I've heard before (admittedly, not a whole ton of it)--you can actually actively listen to most of the album, which is cool.
The Tiki Tones album I really enjoyed. Great songwriting and performances (except maybe "Kon Tiki"), and I love the production. Now if only the first album of theirs wasn't impossible to track down.
If you wanna buy the Crime bootleg I picked up that day, though, be my guest.

and then today I was in Antwerp wih a friend, almost walked by a record/cd store that looked cool (my friends not into it too much)... but I asked can we pop in for a sec... small place, small glass window with some 60's record sleeves, in-case record player and plastic dancing elvis in the window. a bit smudgy too. ... So I get inside I have NEVER seen anything like this in Europe. they ONLY have 40's 50's and 60's music. records and cd's. Everything sorted tby genre. I didnt even notice at first, asked the (60+) lade behind the counter 'do you have some surf?' ... yeah over there.... there's a row of 15 cases, about 40 cd's per case just surf. on top of that seperate cases for dick dale and the ventures. this is quite something for Euope. So I stat diggin '... they have all waves present. hardly any doubles. they had the brand new sundaze superstocks reissues ... a shitload of Jon and the nightriders, all kind of names I only know of comps, lots of french instro grous (remeber that thread Ivan started? with the videos )
damn it, after going through three cases I was already holding ten cd's, and I was only taking what I really really wanted.... I finally decided on three, but hell, Im going back there... often....
anyway, I chose three different styles:
an ep-collection from the Sunlights, not this one but with the same cover pic. 22 tracks, one of which an AMAZING euro instro style version of swan lake (titled 'saturday night' here, I dont think swan lake is actually the name of that particular composition either. isnt't it 'the dying swan?'. whatever)
image
and I got these:
image
(both these upper two are from a (french) comp and reissue label Magic Records. I figured these are groups I dont need original records or cd's from, so i opted for the comps with mucho songs)
image
(this one is actually on amazon now for a whopping 114 bucks???? is anyone paying that for this one? in that case I might make the drive back again, cause they had a couple at the store...)
it was a good day. me happy now!

Sounds like a cool store. There are at least 3 shops in Stockholm that only deals in 50s/60s CDs and vinyl. I really should visit them more often and not buy so much records on the net.

Rhythm Rockers "Soul Surfin"
I also finally got around getting the "Endless Summer" soundtrack (mono vinyl). Not sure why it took so long. Maybe it had something to do with the artwork of the "Complete Sandals" CD.

Surf Creature CD (I have all the vinyl volumes, but wanted the CD)
Surfin' in the Midwest, Vol. 3 CD
Surf Guitar Rumble, Vol. 2 CD
Al Garcia & The Rhythm Kings CD
The Venturas CD
Don't like the last one, and haven't listened to the Rhythm Kings yet, but the first three CDs listed above are really cool. Lots of great obscure sixties surf. Beautiful.

Great choices for the first two, Jon! So, where did you get the Volcanics CD?

I contacted Frankie through the band's myspace page. He just gave me the price ($12) and told me I could mail him a check or money order. He's a really nice guy! He also said that they were working on setting something up with Paypal, but I'm not sure when that will be. I highly recommend the album, though. Great instro tracks, and some killer vocals, too!

Both Surf Creature and Surf Guitar Rumble are great series. I plan to pick up Surfin' In The Midwest volume 3 together with the recently released volume 4. I've passed on the Al Garcia CD in the past but might have to check that out again.

It's good but not great. A lot better than most of the Challengers' stuff (IMO). Ed Fournier's originals are really good, but some of the covers don't stack up. It's kind of a best-of, since their albums are both way out of print, and never got issued in the US in the first place. The guitar tone's much closer to the Ventures than, say, the Astronauts.

I agree with opinions above that the Clee-Shays CD is good but maybe not great. Still an interesting release with cool pics and liners. I have a similar feel towards some of the Challengers albums although they also have the great Rick Griffin cartoons.
I just got Davie Allan's pre-fuzz first album. About half of the songs are not on Sundazed 2 CD anthology.
Anyone yet picked up the just released Cycle Breed compilation?

Apache 65 is a great album. I was lucky enough to find a couple of still sealed copies at a flea market some years back for a buck apiece!
I recently picked up Cycle Breed from Sundazed. Great stuff. It features one of my fave tracks from one of my fave D.Allan LP's (Devils Angel's )- The Devil's Carnival.

Yeah, great album! Many people seem to only appreciate his fuzz days but the earlier stuff is boss too. On a related note, I just recently learned that it's Davie Allan playing lead guitar on all the Hondells tracks that were provided by Mike Curb.

Good to hear! I ordered my copy a couple of days ago and look forward to checking it out.
