compressors and delay/echo

I also noticed the guitarist for the Beloved Invaders uses a tape echo. Why? Is there any need for any effects besides trem, reverb and maybe a mosrite fuzz clone? Not a very fun effect is my reasoning. Also, tape-echo is awesome. Just a really cool effect. The Shadows and Atlantics used it a lot. Top

Personally, "want" has always been more of a ruling factor with my gear than "need" - no matter what the genre. I have an old Ross compressor - I use it as a clean boost with a light compression setting. I really like the way palm-muting through the reverb tank sounds with a little compression in front. I really like the fact that it's different than other compressors in that you can blend the compressed and uncompressed signal. For echo, it's either a Line 6 Echopark or an Echoplex, again, depending on the song. — Mel Top

Also, I know they use compression in recording, but for non compressor users where do you use comps and why? The way I use Echo is for that slap-back style. Just enough so that I can hear it. I run the Echoplex the same way but more as a sound "thickener" for lack of a better way to describe it, definitely different than the Line 6 Echopark. Tape based Echoplex's sound so cool to me. Just fun to play through. For compressors, I tend to use the Tone Press for any number of reasons. For a song I want more sustain on, for a limiter so with my Strat I got a rather overbearing A string and it holds that in check. Lastly I've used when doing Link Wray covers and it helps on the end of the pedal chain to reclaim some of the sound lost in the other pedals. I always thought that sound was the outboard reverb units splashing around. (I havent used one of those either) I might have to demo a compressor this weekend to see if it would be useful. I know my friend/teacher loves his, but I tend to love dynamics. Maybe that one that dials in dry signal would be the ticket. — Owner of Gunbarrel Custom Guitars! Top
estreet Joined: Mar 17, 2007 Posts: 839 United Kingdom	Posted on Jul 09 2009 04:28 AM Compressors have two main uses in surf music I find: The standard Jaguar and several other 'Surf' guitars are not sustainy instruments - and this is normally an asset when it comes to surf music because of its often staccato nature. However, if you do have a slow song with a lot of legato notes in it a compressor can be helpful here. Try a smooth compressor AFTER the tank - it turns up just the reverb that comes after the note so you get a wetter sound, but without muddying up while you are still playing. This can work really well. I use a Red Repeat tape 'style' echo (usually set with the repeats in time with the song) for some numbers — http://www.myspace.com/thepashuns Youth and enthusiasm are no match for age and treachery. I use a Line6 Constrictor set to the 'mellow' switch position and that does this job well.
