I've had my '68 Fender Twin for about 10 years now. Overall, it's been great. A coupla months ago I took it to the local Fender amp expert here in Atlanta for a little work (Bakos Amp Works, btw). He cleaned it up all nice with new tubes, etc. It sounded great at the Drive Invasion--the last time I really used it.
Last week I took the ol' Twin to an El Cap practice and a horrible hum has developed. The hum is there with nothing plugged in. I checked for loose tubes/wires with no joy. I disconnected the reverb and the hum is still there. The ground switch doesn't affect it at all. The hum comes on the second I bring it out of standby. I've always been a little hesitant to dive into the back of this thing... Jeff Bakos probably won't be able to get to it before our next gig, next Sat at Trader Vics.
Anybody got any advice??

Eddie Katcher with The Surge is one of THE very best amp guys in the area...Sticks can hook you up with him.
In the meantine, if you need a loaner amp, I have a Fender Custom Vibrasonic Reverb that you can use at the Trader Vic's gig. It is 100W with a single 15" Weber California, and it will get the job done, and then some! PM me if you need it.

Sounds like a bad connection somewhere, or loose tubes. Worth reseating the tubes and looking over any obvious cabling connections. This is easy stuff, and, since it was just serviced, probably something simple.
Also possible you got a bad tube out of the box. Usually the newer tubes are fine, but once in awhile you can get a bad one.

Jet,
I spoke with Eddie this morning...he said that your humming problem is most likely bad filter capacitors if it isn't tube-related.
This is a fairly common problem on the older Fender amps.

I'd give Jeff Bakos a call again. He's touted as one of the best out there by the guys who produce The Tonequest Report.

Thanks for the feedback folks! I was able to get a hold of Bakos and get my amp in. He thinks it's caps or some other power supply issue (just like Eddie said). I was just hoping it'd be something a know-nothing like me could handle.
Crisis averted. Hope to see the ATL folks Sat night at Trader Vics!!
