My Buddy Jim Frias (sax player)of the Nocturnes and Chantays in the 60's, sent me this e-mail, and I asked if i could post it.
very cool short story.
He said they sounded like a real surf band that night.

After an hour in the Cocktail area talking to old classmates the door

was opened to the dinner/dance area. As soon as Susan and I walked
in

Spickard, Carmen and Welch walked across the dance floor straight
towards Me. Smile 'Jim, Did You bring Your Horn? Are You going to
play with us tonight? I said Yes, My horns are in the car. All 3 said ''Your Playing with us tonight!!!"

Brian asked if I always bring my horn? I said 'no, but I wasn't
going to ask. I was just praying'. They laughed, bear hugged Me and said We're glad You brought Your Horns. Play whenever and as much as You want.

Ricky Lewis and the Bass player didn't come. So it was Spickard,
Carmen, Welch, Johnny Lopez on Bass and Spickards Son In Law on
Rhythm

I played just about all of their 2 sets including 'PIPELINE' in the
first set and the last song!! Smile Smile Spickard said 'Jim, Play the
Bridge'. 2 MAGICAL MOMENTS IN MY LIFE WITH THE SAME BAND.

All these first wave guys are getting up there in age. We recently lost Jim Pash of the Surfaris. I hope one day soon someone has the presense of mind to make a video documentary to preserve the historical aspect of surf music. I know John Blair has written an excellent book on the topic. I think it would make an excellent video too.

we(the supertones)had the pleasure of working with jim frias last april on three cuts for a new record that we recorded at mark neills(www.soilofthesouth.com) recording studio down in san diego, the tracks turn out to be outstanding, what a great guy, i knew he had played with the noctures but i didn't know he had played with the chantays.very cool. if you see him tell him much thanx form the supertones

Will do Tim, I Usually talk to Jim a couple times a month.
hes much more into jazz and blues now. but occasionally he'll go to a big surf show.
He was with the Chantays when they first started. He siad that he played 6 to 8 shows with them, before they decided to go for a non sax sound, like all the other bands had.
he also said that they recorded an early version of Pipeline where he and the Piano player shrared a mic, but the 2 of them overmodulated the signal , and the recording was too bad to use.
