I thought I'd start this as a new topic...
Over on Cowabunga, Jens from the Muffinmates posted this Russian MP3 site that is selling many SG101 artists' CD's as "surf Revival" music.

Several of my own albums are there, along with dozens of other SG101 artists. Nobody ever contacted us about this, we're not seeing a dime, and I'm not sure there's anything a hack musician like myself can do about it - except hope that there's not a lot of interest.
Yes, Rickshaw Records sells downloads too, but the artists get paid. I'm not terribly worried about the money part - except that most of our little niche group is "represented" there, and piracy like this will only expand unless we all take action as a group (whatever action that can be - any lawyers or web-hackers here?)

Rick,
Did you try sending him an email through the "Contact Us" on the site?
That is so wrong....

Rick,
Did you try sending him an email through the "Contact Us" on the site?
No. I'm afraid that would legitimize my email, and they would come looking for more stuff to steal.
However, if anyone (everyone?) is interested, I would be willing to put together a "petition" from us all, and send it to them from an email address that is not associated with anyone's record label or website.
I'll do some research on what legal avenues there really are to get our stuff off that site - My guess is: "not many"
Anyway - The list of bands is obviously taken directly from our little suf music community - not from album sales or profit potential so if you're the guy who is doing this, please stop!

Yeah, I'm in. I just spoke to Mel about the Meltones and Meshugga stuff, I think he would sign on.

That is an intersting thing about this site-- he is not selling everything (Britney spears and Hoobastank), just the surf and related genres, so he must be a fan. Maybe he thinks he is doing a service to the community by making it available.

Doing some online research about Russian mp3 sites, it looks like most of it is focused on the giant allofmp3.com, and there is little that can be done legally to stop it... But I'm working on an idea for our little group...

wowah ... what a prick ....
and if he's a 'surf lover' he sure as hell ain't a trad nazi, having ricky nelson the eerly brothers and James for crying out loud Last in the catalogue....
but uh.... there are SO many names there of musicians (or owners of the rights) with legal departments backing them up, that it might make sense to inform those, and hope the site blows up alltogether.
