I first heard this play on KFJC during Phil Dirt's show but never knew who did it. Years later I was listening to The Sentinels and going off memory thought the song I had heard earlier was Latin Soul but it didn't sound quite like what I remembered, although I highly recommend Latin Soul. At the South Bay Surf Stomp it was covered by The Boardwalkers and I want to thank Baja Marty for cluing me in on the artist of this song. I have to say one of my fav's.

The "Hangin' Twenty" album was reissued on CD by Del-Fi in the mid 90s and then there was also a "Best of" some years later. None of them includes "Gear" though.

The Best of album is pretty easy to come by. I like it a lot. The sax playing is much jazzier than most of what you'll hear from 1st wave sax players (e.g., kinda Paul Desmond-esque). Unfortunately, nothing on the album even comes close to the utter badassery that is Gear!

Both the Boardwalkers and Outterwave do really Heavy spot on versions of this, well as much as you can as a 3 piece.
but I like them.
and I get goosebumps every time I hear them play it.

This is one hot song for sure.
Now if a person had John Blair's Illustrated Discography of Surf Music, 4th Edition, they could see that Gear, backed with Let the Good Times Roll, was issued as Wickwire 13008 in 8/64. "Early copies of this single list this track as Hodge-Wilson. Later copies note this track as by Gary Usher." (Plug for John's book!)
What's (necessarily) missing in this historical discography is modern issues that include the material, for which see The Best of Dave Myers and the Surf Tones. But (as indicated by Jeff) Gear is apparently only available on Lost Legends of Surf Guitar 1 - Big Noise From Waimea!
Dave Myers & the Surf Tones also provide the critical step between the wind-powered Deltas/Rhythm Kings version of Exotic and the guitar-based versions of the Orignal Surfaris, Sentinals, and Renegaids. I think the El Caminos are covering his version. Ditto also Outerwave, I think.

I thought it might be part of the soundtrack for Step Into Liquid, but apparently not. Looking at the youtube vid, looks like that would have made a great trailer, fits damn well I'd say.

Such a brilliant song. That opening note after the intro drum march always gives me chills, and at 0:26 and 1:22... I think those might just be the two most immaculately executed, dribbly tone-thick glissandos in the history of surf music, both in the same song!

Wow I totally agree. This tune really adds dimension to the genre we call surf. It's not a tune that's played at break neck speeds that most people usually associate with surf,it really sets itself apart on layered dynamics, and great timing. I love it!

It's also on one of the Surf Creature comps where it sounds much better than the dull master tape source Sundazed used. The YouTube clip appears to be from vinyl as well.

Anyone know anything about Dave Meyer's whereabouts these days? Is he still among the living?

Remember this thread from the original Surftones' drummer (the guy that actually played on Gear!) Ross?
http://surfguitar101.com/modules.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&t=7128
He's apparently still in contact with Dave Myers and would know what the guy's up to now - they even discussed a reunion.
I exchanged a few PMs with Ross, and he sent me an old B&W Dave Myers & the Surftones publicity photo! Very cool!
