My Dano is a DC59 and I just love it. It's one expensive guitar now though. Upgraded electronics, knobs, Gotoh locking tuners, Graptech nut, polished chrome bridge and Seymour Duncan pickups. Sounds great and stays in tune now Laughing

I have a Dano 63 baritone. It sounds very cool and plays surprisingly well for a cheap guitar, but the tuning is not exactly stable. Probably nothing that couldn't be fixed with some new tuners and/or touching up the nut slots, though.

Considering the state of the economy, What price are you willing to pay for continued convenience? Do you have cable? Could you do without it? Do you home cook your own food? Are you still buying processed foods? Are you choosing fast food over healthy food? Still buying bottled water? Do you drive your car or take public transportation? What do you do to conserve various types of energy? What do you suggest we do as a people to help the economy?

i think that the Hodad is essentially the same basic guitar idea without the pushbutton sound options.
Because i use strings on the heavier side(.011,.014,.018,.30,.49,.52) i put an extra spring in back in the tremelo.

The Innuendo and Hearsay's use standard single coils. The Hodad has two sets of lipsticks and push-pull pots.

The key to the Danelectro/Silvertone sound is that fat middle/in-series tone. That's the reason the old ones sound so good compared to the some of the reissues which simply put in 3-way Gibson-style toggle. It's not the same. With that Gibson switch, the middle position is the thinner/-in-parallel tone (like a Tele). Not bad, but it's not the same. The reissue PUs are actually pretty nice if the wiring is setup properly.

Jerry Jones guitars have the in-series switch. In fact, he sent me a drawing for 3-PU guitars where you can use a 5-way 24-lug switch to get those in-series tones (neck/neck+bridge in series/middle/neck+bridge in parallel/bridge...very versitile setup). It works great with the lipstick PUs and can be adapted for use with Strat PUs too.

One thing I'd add about the reissue Danos:

If you play surf in the style of Mr. Dick Dale, you'll find that sort of rapid-fire picking will vibrate a Dano's pickups loose from their mounting screws, to the point where you'll suddenly find your strings "Muted"!

It's an easy fix, though--just put a dab of loctite or two under each of the pickup screws (they're on the BACK of the guitar) and all will be fine.

As for the Blues jr. Being a good surf amp? Unless you've got some kind of outboard reverb, I'd say "Nah." Of course, you could be one of them rebellious types that does surf WITHOUT 'verb, in which case I say, more power to ya'.

Zak - That's why I was careful to say "some" and not "all" BTW - The three I owned from 10 years ago all had parallel wiring and had to be modded. They sounded much better afterwards.

Good point. One alternative to Loctite, though, may be replacing or augmenting the foam under the pickups, increasing the tension on the threads. I've been double picking the crap out of my Hodad for the past eight or so months, and nothing has come loose yet.
