I think he's suggesting a poll or feature for the site.

Well if Let's Go Trippin' isn't a surf song, then neither is Mr. Moto. Atlantis is a Shadows song, not surf. As you can see, we'll just argue about "what is a surf song", which is your point, I think. But isn't it also funny that a surf music forum can't decide what surf music is? ![Very Happy Very Happy](/media/smiley/images/icon_biggrin.gif)

What other forum would you think a suggestion should go in than the "suggestion box" forum? I was thinking more like a feature that would get listed, more so than a poll. I'd love to hear what would be on your top 20. Instead of a put-down criticism, why not do a positive response and help make a list.

Ok, so lets pretend the rules are: the song has to be listed in John Blair's 4th edition "Illustrated Discography of Surf Music". What would you pick then?

first of all I would have put this in the general discussion area of the forum.
but then as Brandonio pointed out, here we go again, that means this has been discussed many times before, but you probably didn't search for those threads.
as for surf songs,
how about real surf like.
Paradise Cove by the Surfmen,
Latin'ia by the Sentinals,
Bustin Surfboards by the Tornadoes,
The Rising Surf by Richie Allen,
Surf Rider by the Lively Ones,
Body Surf by the Nobles,
Soul Surfer by Johnny Forune,
Pintor by the Pharos,
Cat on a Hot Foam Board by the New Dimensions,
Breakfast At Tressles by the Rhythm Rockers,
Surfin at Mazatland by the Centurions,
Fiberglass Jungle by the Crossfires,
Bombora or Surfari, by the Original Surfaris,
Heavies by the Rotations,
Moment of Truth by Dave Myers and the Surftones, or by The Orginal Surfaris or the Surfteens,
Let there be Surf by the Chevells,
Disintegration by the Ready Men,
K-39 by the Challengers,
On the Run by the Hondells,
Malibu Run by the Fender IV or any of their other songs,
I could go on and on, but just to let you know, those are some of the best songs from the cowabunga box set, its a 4 cd set of surf music,
have you heard of it?

great list, bigtikidude. That's what I'm talking about. Sure I know the box set (which I believe is no longer available except by collectors) and I remember most of the tunes when they originally came out. I've been surfing and playing guitars since the mid 60's.

Ace records from England has a cd with a lot of those songs on it,
called the "Birth of Surf"
also the 4 cd series on Sundazed records from the NE USA.
called the Lost Legends of Surf Guitar Vol 1 thru 4.
pick up either of those.
and there are many many more comps of great old school surf songs.

I have a related question. What are the top tunes most often covered by surf bands in live performances? If Misirlou counts as a surf tune, it's because Dick Dale and then a hundred other surf bands have covered it in surf style, not because it was originally performed on surf guitar. So I'm not ruling anything out based on its origins.
I'd spend 4.5 hours going through my CDs and LPs and counting up what's been covered most on recordings, but I haven't got the time. Anyway here's my guess about the top dozen based on shows I've been at over the years. Note that the first three are the same as on the "top 20 list" that started this thread.
01 - Misirlou
02 - Pipeline
03 - Wipeout
04 - Jack the Ripper
05 - Penetration
06 - Surf Rider
07 - Baja
08 - Squad Car
09 - Mr. Moto
10 - The Cruel Sea
11 - Bombora (Original Surfaris)
12 - Midnight Run
Big Tiki Dude: what was the list of everybody-knows-em tunes played at the hootenanny session at the first SG101 Convention?
