Hagstrom guitars?

So I decided to try the new Hags XL-2 and XL-5 to see what they were like. They still looked very nice, but I found the necks didn't have the quality I expected nor did the pups have the cleanest sound. The two that I tried seemed almost muddy (dull at least) through a Fender Princeton. I don't feel the XL series would work very well for surf, but might for other genres. — Mel Top

I tried a Mosrite, just couldn't justify the cost ($2K and UP). So I bought a Hallmark Custom 60 and have been extremely happy with the sound and build. When I went out to try the new Hag XL series I was going to get one if they sounded half way decent to my ears. But I didn't experience that. — Mel Top

I happen to think Jaguars and Jazzmasters play like ass. I can get use to them, but every one is so different and takes time to get use to. Top

Of all mine the MIJ Jaguar is the least ass-like. The SGV was fine if a tad too narrow for me. I haven't been thrilled with any Gibsons I've played. I suppose it is a matter of personal preference. Not all of them "play like ass" but if you get one that isn't just right then that guitar isn't going to feel good. And that is the case with many guitars I've played. And I do think over time that can be tweaked and you will have a guitar you are happy with(I'm happy with my Jag and two Jazzmasters). I'm just not thrilled with the majority of them I play. I really like how '60s Gibsons play. I've never had a bad experience with them. A lot of the modern gibson electrics have necks set at too much of an angle for my liking. They are making nice acoustics in their Montana plant. Those play real nice. Most guitars aren't the greatest things ever unless you pay a premium. There are things the owner can do to make them better, but the reality is that quality control just isn't good enough to make every guitar play like a winner. Top

If I could find a Jaguar or Jazzmaster that played almost as well as my SGV, I'd likely be playing a Fender again. You haven't actually played one, have you Jake? That is kind of the appeal of the SGVs...they are incredible players. Ok guys, but I already have a wonderful SGV. Although I love fender jazzmasters, I want something different (fenders are close to the SGV). I cannot have more than 3 guitars at home (my wife's rules) Well, we were talking about Hagstroms! More opinions? I'm looking for a kind of les paul with humbuckers. I've never own a humbucker guitar and I'd like to probe it. The other options are Edwards or Tokai Les Pauls, 2nd hand Yamaha SG, or a cheap gibson... Top

I wish I could give you an opinion on the new ones, the only one I have ever tried was the F200, I found the whammy a bit stiff but otherwise a good neck and nice sound from those P90s. I would love to try the Swede Tremar. I guess I could put Bigsbys on my own Swedes but I have spent a fair amount of time and money trying to restore them as close to original as possible and I want to keep them that way. There are a few Hagstrom fan sites you could visit to get an idea of what the hardcore Hag freaks think of the newer ones. Orange with a Bigsby. The most unsual thing was the neck: it was made of a couple dozen thin laminations. It's so long ago that I don't recall how it sounded but the guy played like a demon so it mattered little. Oop -- scratch that, it was a Framus :-~ -- Woody — It takes a lot of mussel memory to avoid clams. Top
