I always get this confused with South Beach ...
OK, this is probably in the top ten dumb questions on SG101, but I didn't turn up anything easily with the search tool, so ... Would somebody like to point me at some standard discussions of what defines "the South Bay style," or maybe just tell me outright? Obviously locality and band lineages, right, but what musically? I know about no reverb or less reverb, but I'm not sure that covers it.

This is off the top of my head:
The Bel-Airs, PJ and The Galaxies, Eddie and the Showmen, Crossfires(?), The Beach Boys, David Marks and the Marksmen, Black Flag and the Circle Jerks.

The South Bay Sound was a type of instrumental rock played by bands like the Belairs around 1960-1961 in the south bay communities around Redondo, Manhattan and Hermosa Beach in Los Angeles County California. So the legend goes, surfer Lance Carson (who was later in 1964's Endless Summer movie) heard the Belairs one night & commented that it sounded like Surf Music.

The Bel Airs & the South Bay Sound
The first true surf band is generally considered to be The Bel Airs. Paul Johnson and Eddie Bertrand met in 1960 and formed the nucleus of the band. They idolized The Storms, Duane Eddy, Link Wray, The Fireballs, The Ventures, and Johnny & The Hurricanes. The Bel Airs formed when Richard Delvy on drums, Chas Stuart on sax and Jim Roberts on piano (sometimes) joined with Johnson and Bertrand.
In May of 1961, The Bel Airs recorded "Mr. Moto", a mutual composition by Paul Johnson and Richard Delvy, along with several other tunes. Arvee Records released the single that summer, making "Mr. Moto" the first surf tune recorded by a surf band. Paul Johnson went on to write a number of classic surf tunes, including "Squad Car", "Scouse", and "Chifflado". Johnson's distinctive style became known as the "South Bay Sound," spawning and inspiring many other bands in the region including The Challengers and Thom Starr & The Galaxies.
Down the road in Orange County there was this guy.

Do The Chantays fit into the South Bay sound?

Black Flag and the Circle Jerks.
Don't forget Pennywise, brah!
Seriously, the Descendents. And oh yeah, those surf bands, too.

I think it was Surf Music by the time they released Pipeline. The Chantays were from Santa Ana High School in the OC so they were not south bay guys. Here is a good article.

It's a peninsula that juts out on the south end of LA, northwest of Borange County. It includes Hawthorne, Redondo Beach, Manhattan Beach, Palos Verdes, but not our little Pilgrim enclave in Pedro.

You've been there Brian. It's where last year's SG101 gig was at Suzys in Hermosa Beach.
If you surf the Southbay and happen to catch a nice long right, you'll end up in Huntington Beach. If you catch a nice left, we'll, you'll end up in Malibu, but, it'll be a much nicer ride if your goofyfoot.........

If we're not South Bay, then that makes us "Harbor Area" (Harbor City, Wilmington, Lomita) - say it ain't so!

The Chantays I consider the Orange County sound and what abut The Challengers? Theyre a well known South Bay band.

Don't forget Ambrosia. Dave Pack went to my High School, Torrance High which was seen as West Beverly Hills High in 90210, Sunnyvale High in Buffy the Vampire Slayer and also in Zoey 101 (?). The drummer of Survivor (Eye of the Tiger), Marc Droubay went to Bishop Montgomery High where Eddie and Paul went. Also, Charles Thompson (AKA Black Francis, Franck Black) is from Torrance. One more and perhaps the biggest, Danny Gans, Entertainer of the Year every year in Las Vegas went to my elementary and high school.

I think the impact of the 'South Bay Sound" is often under estimated. In his book "The Lost Beach Boy" David Marks credits Paul Johnson and Eddie Bertrand for being one of the larger motivating forces for he and Carl Wilson to learn how to play guitar.

Actually, I was trying to forget about Vince Neil, it isn't all sunshine in the South Bay.
Bob Fleischman, of Journey (for a minute in the 70s) went my schools too.

I'm not 100% sure as I'm a OC boy.
but I would take a stab and say no,
as its not on the bay side, but on the Long Beach harbor side of the
Palos Verde peninsula.
