When your local paper lists your upcomming gigs in their entertainment section, under what genre do they list your band? Our local paper always puts us under the heading Pop. Normally I don't give a crap, but all this talk about 3rd and 4th waves got me thinking and analyzing and scrutinizing. So I noticed when an Irish band comes to town (very infrequently) the newspaper creates the heading Irish. This inspired me to write the following letter to our entertainment editors:
_April 25, 2009
To whom it may concern:
For starters, a note of thanks for all the listings in Showtime you've provided our band. Those really contribute nicely to the large turnouts we receive at our gigs. With that said, I have a special request. What's the possibility of listing our music under its proper genre? Normally we're listed under pop. But instrumental surf is its own recognized genre.
The reason I mention this is I've noticed when Irish bands come to town, they're listed under the heading of Irish. So would it be possible to list our style under Surf? While there are two sub-genres of surf, namely surf-pop and surf-rock (and we play both) just the heading of surf would do the trick - much in the way the category Irish is understood by your readers.
Thank you for this consideration.
Best regards,

Our local publications list shows by date and venue and a short(venue provided) blurb about the bands playing. The venue rarely mentions the band genres.
We have the Stranger and Seattle Weekly for our music listing goodness. The big local papers(now paper) doesn't list local gigs.

I believe in Denver it's considered particularly flattering if they get the address of the bar right.

Well Gang, Good Luck on trying to get thru to your local Papers, especially with a 'boatload' of them closing their doors. Down here, the big ones such as the Miami Herald and the Sun Sentinnel are in BIG Financial trouble. Do you think they are going to worry about categorizing correctly for local bands in the neigborhood? No, and that's including the Smaller Papers too.
I only say this while still trying to figure out how MaDonna
got inducted into the R&R Hall of Fame last year....
OK, I have to go now, so I can watch my favorite shows,

I vaguely recall a venue listing my old band on their website as "heavy country," a phrase I have never heard before or since...not as cool as "Norwegian thrash post-industrial gothic-influenced viking doom metal" by any means, though...
