And this is caused by myspace and the death of the small labels who would actually release surf. It may not be a new wave, but the industry has had a paradigm shift and that is effecting how surf music is discovered. It is way too easy to get your music heard these days, and it is too easy to share your music. There is no standard for releasing your music anymore. Anybody can put anything out. In my opinion, this is a bad thing. Top

In "Pop Surf Culture," the 2nd and 3rd were defined almost generationally. But, of course, there is crossover. The Insect Surfers, for instance... where do they fit? They've been around for all three waves, and they are as good as ever. If there was a 2nd wave, I kind of think it was defined by the punk and new wave era. The 3rd wave hit big during the '90s alternative and retro-everything and indie film boom period. The Phantom Surfers cap it off at 1997, when the wave crashed, and perhaps that is true. There were SO many surf bands then, and distributors stopped carrying new surf product, according to one friend who was a buyer at Tower Records in the late '90s. Yet, at the tail-end of that 3rd wave, there were some bands that sort of watched the ship go down, like the Ghastly Ones... and they found a way to make their music even better in the 2000s. I feel the same about Man or Astroman? and a bunch of other great '90s surf bands. Plus, of course, there are newer bands, which could be considered 4th wave, that did not benefit from the publicity that Pulp Fiction afforded a lot of '90s bands. So maybe it is a different era? Top

There were lots of cds put out in the 90's by the bands themselves. its just that most people think of the ones on lables. and the 1st wave had plenty of indie label and self released 45s. there are cd and LP comps full of rare obscure 1st wave tracks. — Jeff(bigtikidude) Top
