First tune that came to mind is "Ghastly Stomp" by the Gaslee Wuns.

Calhoun Surf & Pacifica - LSJ
Ewa on the Beach - Frankie & the Poolboys

I think Tomorrowmen, and Frankie & the Poolboys belong in the 4th wave or something.Correct me if I'm wrong people.

all depends if you think there is a 4th wave or not.
I think its just the 3rd wave on a 2nd wind.
technically the 3rd wave never stopped.
just kinda lost steam for awhile.

Ya know... I thought about that. Seriously. I would consider those 4th wave if a 4th wave exists. Perhaps that should be a new poll?
But I suspect the original question was aiming for songs played by the more contemporary surf bands out there.

so technically, would that be a 2nd or 3rd harmonic and the 4th wave would be an octave?

My statement still stands.I think the 4th wave is amongst us.I mean no disrespect to Frankie and the Poolboys,or the Tomorrowmen. The bands today have a different sound than classic 3rd wavers like Man Or Astroman,Impala,Satan's Pilgrims,Phantom Surfers,Galaxy Trio,Bomboras,or the Fathoms.I just think a line should be made some where.

..well...we are now in the 21st century...i believe you can make a decent argument for the existence of a 4th wave...

It seems like as soon as people think of the defining reverb of the '90s, that's the song they think of. And here's a funny story related to it. I think the main reason why the reverb on that song sounds so big is not that it's cranked up all that high, but rather that the recording is highly compressed. I spoke to Frankie about this and he and the band were very upset about the mastering job done by the label AVI on the "Fathomless" CD. Frankie felt that the CD was far too compressed and had no life, no breathing room. They worked closely with the mastering guy (in fact, Bruce Kane in Virginia who produced, engineered and mastered the Space Cossacks recordings - and has been mastering the Madeira recordings) to make sure that didn't happen again on their second CD (Overboard). I think Overboard does sound better, but the downside is that the reverb doesn't 'pop' nearly as much as on the first CD. So, there you go, another case of the artist being unhappy about something that the audience absolutely loves.

Ivan,
Thanks for the great information. God how I wish a book would come out on Modern surf music, from the late '70s to the present. The subject needs a lot more room that the measly two chapters Domenic and I provided in "Pop Surf Culture." There are just so many dynamic musicians and diversity of ideas.

Please don't insult other people. One of the people who feels this way is John Blair himself. While you may not agree with him, I wouldn't call John Blair "clueless".

Another way to say what you said would be to lay out your argument and then ask him for his reasoning for why there was no 3rd or 4th wave.
