Anyone heard this band?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u9hGkknV6N0

I've heard of them. A friend played a CD of theirs once. It isn't surf anything.

Good stuff though.

We closed the last podcast (#7) with it. Cool song.

Their second album, "Instrumental Vibrations" is less psych and a lot more surf (and highly recommended). The first one has one actual surf song, "The Surfin' Secret Agent A Go-Go."

-Warren

That was excessively violent and completely unnecessary. I loved it.

I guess if Davie Allan and the Dave Myers Effect aren't surf, then this isn't. Maybe a bit more modern... shoegaze and drone influenced... but I definitely hear surf. And I always like when groups do something a little more modern with it, like the most recent stuff from Man or Astroman, Bambi Molesters, Spindrift and especially the new Satan's Pilgrims clip.

There was a discussion here a while ago about whether surf was going to ever hit the mainstream again. If it does, I imagine it will be more of sub-mainstream thing, but I feel like the indie world is acquiescing to surf's more gritty nature.

If they bagged the synth/theremin thing, it'd be a lot more listenable, IMHO.

It takes a lot of mussel memory to avoid clams.

That's what I like most about it.

Same here Brian. That draws me to the song.

I have 1 cd by Vibrasonic, and 2 by Simon Jones, the guitar player from Vibrasonic.
I like it, but its def. way out there.
couldn't listen to it over and over.

Brian,
funny you like this, but not the Mermen.

A narrower view will not make you look more core.

The Exotic Guitar of Kahuna Kawentzmann

You can get the boy out of the Keynes era, but you can’t get the Keynes era out of the boy.

So I should call that surf music when it is obviously not surf music? Won't make me look core? What is core? Is that suppose to be "trad" or something like that? I don't care about being "core". I don't even care about liking surf music.

I will cede your point if you explain to me how it is more surf than psychedelic.

it's your core score.... like surfing with short shorts on

_core: A moderately high level of cool, rad, or awesome.
Example: S: I just picked up that new Me First and the Gimme Gimmes album. It's great. R:New MFaGG? Core. _

So... because I said I liked a bands songs but didn't call them surf, that doesn't make me any more moderately cool?

I don’t care whatever anybody calls it. How’s that?

Fair enough - "actual surf" was probably not the best description I could have used. There's a strong surf influence throughout the (mostly vocal) first album, but one of the instros is impossible to mistake as anything but surf.

I'm not really a fan of hippy music or jam bands, Jeff. I like '60s and '70s European drone music, and German Krautrock, as well as '80s shoegaze and neo-psychedelic music, which is a little more cryptic and interesting than, say, the Grateful Dead. But that's just one man's opinion. However, Vibrasonic fits more with my taste than the Mermen, that's all.

I'm not exclusively into trad surf, like my book might suggest. I like trad and experimental. Just don't like to be put to sleep. Wink

I had the great pleasure of seeing Simon Jones and his latest band, the Space Agency, play last week. Simon is a great guitar player and I can't recommend the band enough.
