I may have to sell my Jazzmaster! I'm really used to Strats and Tele's and I think the neck orientation on my Jazzmaster is hurting my shoulder! I've been having shoulder pain, and laid off the jazzmaster for 2 weeks and the pain is gone! I have a bad shoulder, and in the past I did have to sell my parlor acoustic because the small body changed my playing position too much and hurt my shoulder.
Anybody else run across this? Anyone want a good deal on an AV jazzmaster?

How is the neck oriented differently? Have you tried raising or lowering your strap? I'm assuming your pain, if you are right handed, is in your left shoulder. That is really odd, I've never had pain there while playing guitar. I'm guessing you need some sort of physical therapy to strenghten the muscles in the area. What is sounds like to me is what i have in my right shoulder, which is baseball caused. Pretty much its the arm sliding slightly out of its natual alignment. I had physical therapy and I am better for the most part. I doubt I am better anymore, but I haven't really thrown a baseball since I got better from being sick... which is another story.
Its a shame to sell a Jazzmaster and keep a strat. And a tele isn't too much of a surf guitar. Don't get me wrong I love teles more than most guitars, they just look cool. Can't play indie rock without a tele in your band and I am known to love my 'indie' rock.

My shoulder? Let's start with Wrestling, Football, Mountain Bike crashes, and the worst sin of all... Hitting 40... A couple years ago... The orientation I am speaking of is in the seated position. The nut is "farther away" from me and a little higher up.
Don't worry, I won't be keeping a strat and a Tele, I'll be keeping a G&L Legacy, and a G&L ASAT... I was just using the generic shape names of those guitars

I like G&Ls.
You should play standing up more often. I used to be a sitter, now I play better standing. You can also try, while sitting down, wearing a strap and keeping the guitar off your lap and down to the side. That is how I play sitting down. It allows the larger body of the Jaguar and Jazzmaster to be farther right and more where a tele or strat would be.

What's odd is I was always under the impression that the Jazzmaster was basically designed for sit-down playing. It was supposed to be a jazz-ish guitar, and most all those guitarists play seated - I even think that most of the ads from it's inception show the player sitting down.
Personally, I don't even think I can play sitting down anymore. Just not comfortable. Of course, I play my guitar realllly low, so that must have something to do with it.

Have you tried a Jaguar?
Shorter scale could be just the ticket as long as you don't have big hands. Don't give up on the offsets!
Also lots of glucosamine, that stuff works great!

Assuming you have any cartiledge glucosamine and Samee does work
Yeah the jag. I've thought about trading for a jag, but it's not a sit down play for 15 minutes and ask if it hurts. It's a "repetitive use" situation. Plus I can't even play a les paul. losing another 3/4 inch in scale... not sure I could play one...
Thanks for the constructive advice.

Seriously, perhaps it's your chair and/or chair height. Try to hone in on all the variables before you spend money on another guitar.

Shorten your strap until your guitar is in the same position whether you sit or stand. You won't look so cool, but your shoulder may thank you.
