It has to be personal, that's the only possible explanation. It makes no sense whatsoever that Dick Dale has not been inducted into the "Rock and Roll" Hall of Fame (quotes deliberate) even at this late date. There's no question that DD has made an indelible mark on Rock music. At very least, his work with Leo Fender to develop louder and more robust amplifiers should be sufficient. Leo himself is in the Hall of Fame!
When I heard this morning that the rap group "Run D.M.C." was being inducted this year, it was the last straw. The "Rock and Roll" Hall of Fame has always had flawed process for selecting inductees. It's basically at the whim of a board whose main concern is selling tickets, not honoring the history of the genre. Perhaps some distant day, with a different board in place, justice will be done. Dick will probably live to see this -- the man is tough.

How many times have we gone over this? The Hall of Fame SUCKS. And Truth be told, Run DMC has had a much bigger impact on the world. Poll people on the street-way more have heard of Run DMC than Dick Dale.

I understand we've been through this a lot. I dig DD as much as everyone on this list. I came across this article on MSNBC news page the other about the RRHOF and about Rush. In this article there is a section about the nomination process are how it works. I found it amazing that bands like the Yes, the Moody Blues and Rush have never made it in. They are played on classic rock radio constantly. Each of the aforementioned bands have way, way out sold DD. I love Dick Dale and he should be in too, Link as well.
And for those who knock the RRHOF have probably never been there. It is a totally amazing place. Like when Spinal Tap visit Graceland kinda moment. TOO much fucking perspective.

I agree with Ted.
People make a stink about him not being in the Hall of Fame now, but when he is inducted we'll just pretend like it is no big deal and that the Hall of Fame has no relevance.

We were having this argument about The Ventures a year or two ago.

Your absolutely right Brian and we have no control over the situation. But for all the people/bands that aren't in there, there are a lot of cool bands/people that are. So, just take it a face value as what it is.

I was pretty sure that the topic had been discussed before -- after all, dis is da SurfGuitar place -- but it opened the wound again hearing about a freakin' RAP group being considered in the same breath as. Holding breath now. ROCK AND ROLL!!
And yes, I have been to the RRHOF. I found it boring and I love R&R music -- having grown up listening to Elvis on my toy phonograph when "You Ain't Nuthin' But a Hound Dog" was on the charts and following the genre through the '50s, '60s and '70s (until it died in the '80s). The displays did nothing to communicate the excitement and raw emotion that Rock imparts to its adherents. Clothes? Clippings? Pfeh. Honestly, the only exciting part of the museum was the short two-part film on the history of Rock. The second opened in the middle of a live video of The Who playing "Won't Get Fooled Again". That sent chills. On the way out, we passed a display dedicated to Britney Spears which about summed up the experience.

I too used to be upset about these things, but now I don't care. DD, Link, and many others will get in there eventually. I don't need somebody from a corporation making money off pop culture to tell me who made an impact on my life and is a hero to me.

Hip Hop group. They were very talented at what they did and very influential. I'm sure they won't be going in as a rock group. They've allowed all sorts of non-rock artists in. Although, this is the first modern non-rock group to go in.

I think it's a crime that the Captain and Tennille aren't in there.

Run-DMC are not rock'n'roll! That's the point.Do you think The Surfaris/Beach Boys will make it to a Rap/Hip Hop Hall of fame for Wipeout which was sampled by the Fat Boys. I think not. RRHF makes me sick!
Yeah we were talking about this last year and the year before that too.Sadly we'll probably be ranting like this for years to come.

Agreed. It still grates, however.

There are a ton of non-Rock and Roll bands in the hall of fame. It is a genre that doesn't resemble itself anymore. It is possible that in the future that the majority of music from the past century is referred to as Rock and Roll.
Run DMC is much more Rock and Roll than the Beach Boys are Hip-hop.
To me, actual Rock and Roll doesn't exist in anything other than cult genres. Buddy Holly, Elvis, and their ilk. That is the true rock and roll. Something in society dictated that we called everything that followed rock music.

THAT did it for me. I will now most likely never bother going to the RRHOF.

Run-DMC don't even play real guitars. That should be your first stipulation for being considered Rock'n'Roll.Sampling a guitar track doesn't count, period.

I don't think they are going in as a rock and roll band. They are just going in as an influential band. I'm sure what people call modern rock has been influenced by them.
And playing real guitars should not be a criteria for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Piano is a very rock and roll instrument. Jerry Lee Lewis? Little Richard?
