The extra drip mod was nesecery i think cause when i've put the 4AB3C1B it looses all of the pedal drip. Can you also post here the schematic for the dpdt to be able to select the two tanks?thank you

Thank you very much!Whats does the knob and the other switch do in your pedal? |
Joined: Apr 15, 2008 Posts: 1281 |
The other knob is feedback for the internal delay - I've got it set to a stock time setting for now. Usually I just keep it turned off though. The switch next to it goes between two different capacitor settings for the drip mod. The switch on the side of the pedal switches between the internal and external tanks. — |

Nice!Im gonna put a DPDT also with two capacitors for the drip mode and i will use a 1220pf and a 560pf. Did you have any feedback problems when the volume knob is set high? |

I think there is a bit with the 1220 pF - you can correct that by putting in a 1k trim pot in place of that that 120 ohm resistor. More resistance = less volume. I used the rectangular type found at Radioshack, and soldered it on via wires and then held it down with electrical tape to avoid accidentally pulling and ripping out traces. I wouldn't make this an external control, because it acts as an antenna and picks up radio signals if you put your fingers near it. Find a happy medium where it still gets drippy with the smaller cap, but you have a good range on the volume knob with the bigger cap before it starts to feed back. — |

ok.And last thing. What kind of capacitors did you use?Electrolitic or ceramic? |

I used ceramic - just what I had available. I'd stay away from electrolytic, they're usually polarized and not great in the signal path. You could also try silver mica - they often are found in these small values. — |

Possibly an old tube spring reverb? I've seen them before, but I have no idea if they're any good and know nothing about the design. — |

Damn you! I am now looking at a Spring King Pedal. Sigh. Guitars and cars are money pits! |

For that RC filter - another good combo for the heavy drip sound when using the big external tank is a mix of .022uF cap and a 1.7k resistor. (Increase that resistor value to 2.6k for an even heavier drip.) That way you don't have to use ceramic caps. I used a huge polypropylene cap, like a 600 volt one intended for amps. Any film cap would be fine. It's the same amount of drip as a combination of 48k and a 780 pF cap, but with a better sound quality due to the nicer cap. Frequency response is 4257.6 Hz. You can try out different values and calculate the frequency response here: http://www.muzique.com/schem/filter.htm Some frequencies I've tried: 48k + 560pF = 5923.9 moderate drip 48k + 680pF (560 + 220) = 4878.5 moderate heavy 48k = 1220pF (560 + 220 + 220 + 220) = 2719.2 Super heavy drip 48k + 440pF (220 + 220)= 7539.6 airy So, lower frequency response = more bass, more drip. Bigger cap and resistor values = more bass. Feel free to experiment. With the .022uF/1.7k combo, I get a nice surf drip at maximum volume (dwell), but a nice smoother reverb with a lower volume setting. — |

i've also send this to uma floresta but other may help me too Hey, finally i modded my danelectro with these two pots correctly but i don'T here a difference than before and whenn i turn the pots i can'T here a difference?! Have i done something wrong? Could you please send me detail photos of the solderings?? Would be great.. My Sound is very bad, well obviously it's because of playing a Les Paul but there is still this overdriven tone when i use the reverb. I also turn the amps reverb on full Thank you for these interesting mods — |

Although I don't even mess with the Dano's delay function anymore. I have the delay permanently wired so it's off. I just have an extra reverb gain knob and bass switch now. —http://www.reverbnation.com/thedeadranchhands http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jZEW74mHjQk Last edited: Mar 24, 2009 15:45:50 |

All right Uma. I've been watching this thread for the past year and it's finally time for me to try some of your experiments myself. I've got a Spring King arriving on Friday. What's your final word on your tweaks--at least, your final word to date. I'm probably going to stick to the internal springs to keep it smaller (and cheaper) since you've said they still sound pretty good, and your sound clips confirmed as much. Drip mod - Sounds like you're saying it'd only be worth it if I went for the external tank? Delay mod - You started with a 50k pot, went to 10k for fine tuning, then mentioned wiring it to make the delay permanently off. Which of these options would you recommend? Feedback mod - Was your final tweak to have it as a 50k pot in series with a 15k resistor? Still your recommendation? Any other changes you'd recommend? Also, I noticed in some of your pics you have a Reel Echo pedal. How well does it combine with your Frankenstein Spring King? Happen to have any sound samples of the two of them together? Any mods you've attempted on the Reel Echo? Thanks much, and thanks for giving me a project to brush up my soldering skills with before I build my Bassman next month! |

Okay, if you're sticking with the internal tank, I'd skip the drip mod. There's already enough drip using a small tank. I just got rid of the external echo controls because I didn't need the extra echo, and I wanted extra drip controls for the big tank. So, if you don't need an extra delay pedal, just wire a 50k or larger resistor where the feedback pot would be and be done with it. If you want a versatile delay, I'd use a 50k pot for both delay time and feedback, with a 1k resistor in series with the feedback pot to avoid too much oscillation (you can still get it to oscillate, but not so much that it overloads). If you just want a few flavors of slapback with no oscillation, I'd go with the 10k delay time pot, 50k feedback pot with 15k resistor in series. Any of these are fine, it just depends on what your preference is. Regarding the Reel Echo, it's a nice sounding delay pedal, but some limitations frustrated me. The tone knob seriously cuts delay volume and feedback, so it's hard to adjust. You can work with it, but it's kind of a PITA. Also, no self-oscillation. The tone of the delay however is quite nice, I think. I didn't come up with any mods, though I thought about it. Instead I sold it and bought a BBE Two Timer (based on the Boss DM-2), and I'm happy with the Two Timer. Two Timer clip: Reel Echo clips: |

Thanks a bunch. Sounds like Door #2 is the best bet for me so I can keep my sound options open until I figure out what settings I like best for the pedal. |
