OK, the melody to Telstar is easy to figure, it works out of the A major scale.

Anybody have any recent intelligence on the rhythm accompiament?

I've seen/heard simple 4-chords to more complex monstosities.

Here is what M. Sato has to say about the chords:

What day is Surf Rock's birthday? Looks like Surf Rock and I was born the same year. Maybe we are both Libras?

Anything in the SG101 Yahoo archives on Telstar? Anyone have a copy of the sheet music they would part with?

I've heard it referred to as "the same chords as 'Heart and Soul' " or some thing like that.

Come on SG101, I'm sure someone got something on this song theye want to share.

We are not the Fin-Dictators as sometimes spelled on marquees.

Cliff, try this. I figured out these chords around '96, since the Space Cossacks used to play it in the early days. I really don't know if they are correct or not (I had them in a Word file, but don't have the time to check them right now), but it might help anyway. (And though I wouldn't bet my life on it, I suspect the chords are correct - it's pretty simple stuff.)

The Tornados: Telstar

intro: F#-G-G#-A-E

verse: A-F#m-D-E
A-F#m-D-E
C#m-C#m-F#m-D-E
A-F#m-D-E
(repeat)

bridge: A-F#m-D-E (four times)

verse again, bridge again

modulation: A-A#-B-C-C#

verse II: D-Bm-G-A
D-Bm-G-A
F#m-F#m-Bm-G-A
D-Bm-G-A

end: D - - ->

Ivan,

I will give it a try. I have spent decades coping riffs off records, tapes and CD's, but I couldn't figure out the tonality of the chords from the original Tornados recording. Well maybe if I quit my job and twiddled in my basement long enough I'd eventually get it. The C#m's are the part I I couldn't "hear".

Thank you very much,

I have a copy of the 1962 copyright sheet music. It shows the song in the key of C and the minor chords are minor 7ths.

There is Surf east of Sepulveda.

Here is the chart I made for the Shadow's version of "Telstar":

Casey

I always had trouble trying to find out the chords of the high pitched harp sounding instrument. Still not positive.
