Hi All,
I've been playing around with Garageband trying to get a good simulation of an outboard reverb and a Twin. So far, not so great on the Twin (I have an actual old B.F. Twin for comparison) and not even close for the reverb tank. Has anyone here come up with a really good, drippy reverb simulation in Garageband?

Nope.
Your best bet is to get a USB mic like a Blue Snowball and mic your amp.
I have one and it's great!!

Thanks skeeter
Oh, I know I can do that and I've got the gear for it but that involves cranking up the amp and finding places to perch equipment in my crowded little office.
For the most part, I keep my Strat on a stand next to me and have it plugged into my MacBook through a POD (2.0) into the line-in jack. The effects on the POD are adequate but the reverb is pretty boring. The same is true of most of the plug-ins I've tried. I suspect that it's possible to tweak one or the other of them to simulate drippy reverb but I haven't hit on it yet. BTW -- the plug-ins currently installed are the Track Reverb, the AUMatrixReverb, Ambience reverb and the Luxonix LFX-1310. This last is a killer piece of software -- and free.

I just messed with this a little last week. I tweaked out the stock surf setting, and I think it's sounds pretty decent. I also went in through my tank, and it sounded great. I think as long as you're not looking for the "ultimate sound" from the program, you'll be happy.
I'm working with Garage Band '08. What version are you using? I've seen some of the features in '09, and it looks better still. I need to get my hands on that.

Yep, I had tried a few of those plug-ins a while back and I think the Luxonix was the better of them, but still not very good.
Problem is, you not only have to find a good reverb simulator, but you also have to have a good amp simulator too, and getting the right combo is really difficult.
I'll just run my outboard through my little Champ 600 amp and get a pretty good sound, not too loud and pretty easy to set up.
Actually it really doesn't matter, because all I'm really recording are demos, so I really could just use the modeling stuff. But I guess I've just become a tone snob or something.

I plug into an Echo unit with some gain, then tank, then a tube pre-amp before the computer. It gets pretty drippy.

are you still happy with this product? i want to attempt a recording for the 2009 comp and want to make this as easy as possible. i have garageband and a imic but no cable for connecting guitar to imic so a mic on the amp might be my best way to go. or not? (i'm so confused)

Yep, it's great! And really simple to set up, just plugs straight into the USB port and that's pretty much it.

I bought an adapter for a guitar cable into a mini plug that goes into the iMic. Or they have cables just for that purpose:

I've been getting better results this way than when I used a mic-probably because I can turn things up a little since I don't have a proper studio. I used this direct method to record Stormtiger Stomp on the 2009 compilation.

i've got a cable on order. i messed around with the snowball mic this morning. it was my first stab at using garageband. the first couple of efforts were pretty bad but i'm slowly figuring out how to get it right. hopefully by the end of the year i'll have a finished product.

The absolute best reverb would be to run SIR (a convolution reverb) with impulses from a Fender tank. Another option is to run direct with an outboard reverb unit.
The Blue mics are cool...I've never personally tried the USB ball mic though.
The original Blue "Ball" and the "Kickball" were/are incredible mics for guitar but unlike the USB mic you need a preamp with phantom power to use them.
They're also dynamic mics and I think the USB ball is a condenser.
I was fortunate enough to pick up a kickball and a regular ball mic when they were on blowout. I think at one point they got as low as $39 before they were discontinued by Blue.

Altiverb is another convolution reverb plug-in. A friend once gave me a demonstration of it's awesome power, wow! Very cpu intensive though.
