I will echo the votes for The Wedge, Surf Beat and—of course—Grudge Run. Wink

Shocked hava nagila Shocked i play a strat and this one is intense

My all time favorite is a version of Pipeline he did with Stevie Ray Vaughn.
It totally kicks butt!
Joel Cool

By far the Wedge.

I always thought that SRV duet of pipeline was weak, but maybe because living in Austin has given me a healthy hatred for all things SRV...

I actually really Like SRV, but thought the duet of Pipeline was scary bad. just my opinion, don't shoot me.

I am curious as to the weakness you see in the DD/SRV version of pipeline. I am new to playing surf music, and I miss some of the innuendos that many take for granted. Could you fill me in on the weaknesses, please. Very Happy

Same question as above please. Very Happy Please help me learn.

I actually liked the DD/SRV version of Pipeline, but I didn't like the fact that they substituted some low E-G thing instead of the signature guitar line/riff of the original song. What's that all about? Confused

I also read/heard that DD and SRV were not even in the same recording session when they did their parts??? True?

Too me Pipeline always had that laidback mellow feel to it.
Like riding a perfect wave that just kept going and going, with no worries. But DD's playing on it is too loud and aggresive for it in my opinion, kinda ruins the original vibe for me.
and then SRV's playing is usually pretty gritty sounding. but on that track its real thin and very limp wristed sounding.
some of this could have been the Producer or Engineers fault.
I don't know.

but over all I just thought that compared to the Original it totally missed the mark. But maybe thats what they were going for then.
But I don't care for it. sorry.

Geez, where do I start?

The production is over-done, SRV's playing is terrible (THATS the best he could do for a surf tune?!), and the cool, minimalist vibe of the original is totally deystroyed.

Gotta love Dick Dale's hair though. Confused

Yeah, and it's kinda got an 80's cock-rock, hair band feel to it, in my opinion. I always skip that track, as well as the one before it on that greatest hits CD.

And that picture is insane.

So we are judging songs now based upon how the performers dress up to lip sync it in a movie later? Confused

jeez, altough its not the best version of pipeline out there, I will give it credit because practically ever other version out their tries to copy the original but fails. This at least combines a little of Dick and Stevie with a pipeline twist.

ps Misorlou was never my favorite dick dale song. For me,"Let's Go Tripping" was the dale song that defined the surf sound.

Mine has to be "The Victor."

bigtikidude, MPoppitt...
Thanks for the replies. Smile
I was wondering what would be the discretionary word. I don't mind that either of you don't like the effort. That's cool!
That’s what makes each of us have a different sound.
It's a good thing this contrast in life.
I like the DD/SRV version as well any pipeline song version out there, with perhaps a nod to the original as the best template. Very Happy
Actually pipeline in its many varied forms is (in my opinion) the definitive surf song.
I believe DD&SRV was nominated for a Grammy for their version of pipeline. Constdering that both of their playing styles is miles apart, I think they did well not to sound to much like they normally do.

Thanks for your thoughts and the nice replies.

No. I formed my opinion based on the sound of the song.

My question was not addressed to you, Jon, but to Klas who posted the picture.

Oh, my mistake. Sorry Brian.

True, Brian. Seperate recording sessions for them. They didn't meet until the filming of the movie that the photo comes from.

Gary Usher produced it.

When I first saw that movie, I didn't know who D.D. was, but I sure knew about SRV. I thought the big haired guy was some band leader that was there, kind of like G.E. Smith. I had no idea it was someone famous. I thought "who's this poser next to SRV?" I found out about D.D. later that year.

Favorite D. D. Song? "A Run for Life"

Oh, and I like that version of "Pipeline" second favorite version next to the orig.
