Per was absolutely amazing in that contest, but I agree Rodney is THE master. I used to skate freestyle (check out that link in an earlier post). If you dig freestyle, there is a cool video from Skateledgends.com of great old school freestyle (including that Per routine). It was made by Kevin Harris, Lynn Cooper, and Stephan "Lillis" Akesson and it's called Flatlands by Reverse Freestyle. Or like you said, there are lots of snipits of Rodney on the net. —https://www.facebook.com/index.php?lh=9353f9155b5ff32e14c998495fd00da4&#!/rich.derksen.7 |

I've been getting back into skating with my 10-yr-old son and it's still great! I can still pull off a couple of berts on the halfpipe or spin a 360 or two when all the groms are trying to ollie down the stairs. I wish we had this many skateparks in the 70s/early 80s!!! Portland is crammed with parks and they're ALL way better than what I had to skate in Sacto back in the day. Now if it just didn't rain so much up here..... Here's my skate quivver: Steve |

There are several good skate parks around the Sacto area now, too. I figure it's our generation of frustrated skaters getting all these parks built. Hey, that banana board brings back some memories. That was my first board in the early-mid 70s. —Don |

I started skateboarding seriously back in the mid 1990's when skateboarding was kind of at a low point. Would have been cool to have been around and skating back in the golden years of skateboarding. Skateboarders when I was first into it were the outcasts. Now the young kids skateboarding are the "in" crowd. Amazing how trends come and go. Sweet banana board by the way. |

if you haven't seen it yet, 'dogtown and z boys' is the skate movie to see for a past history. — |

...and see the same story told in the movie "Lords of Dogtown." It's fun to watch for cameos from Jay Adams, TA, Peralta, Muir and others... not to mention Heath Ledger's uncanny portrayal of Skip Engbloom. —Steve |

While you're at it check out the Duane Peter's Story. Frontman for the U.S. Bombs and Skateboarding legend, the first skater ever to complete the full loop. Great skate footage of Duane and my favorite, Jason Jessee, also some sweet U.S. Bombs footage as well. |

The documentary mom mentions is far far far superior to the big budget Lords of... movie, you get the (somewhat) real story from the guys that were there. Throughout the doc you see pictures and ads from back in the 70's and I kept saying, "I remember that issue of Skateboarder Magazine". After I watched that doc I realized how much media has changed since then particularly regarding access to what is happening elsewhere. Skateboarding wasn't on TV, in movies, or anywhere else. We learned everything about skateboarding from Skateboarder Magazine. Anyway, I highly recommend that one over the hollywood movie. And that Duane Peters video is completely insane. That dude was on a collision course with disaster. —https://www.facebook.com/index.php?lh=9353f9155b5ff32e14c998495fd00da4&#!/rich.derksen.7 |

I didn't mean to imply that Lords _is in any way a better movie than _Z-Boys. Of course, Stacy Peralta's documentary is "far far far superior" to the Lords, especially on a factual story-telling level... something like _Riding Giants _vs. _North Shore _maybe. I'm just saying it's fun to watch the cameos. The interviews in the DVD's extra features are totally worth watching. —Steve |

Thats why they call him the master of disaster! Has any one seen "Pray for me" (the Jason Jessee Doc)? |

Hey Cool video. I use to Skate back in the day(when I was in the 6th grade, around early 2000). I was pretty good too, I could do a couple tricks. I always wanted to learn the Old Skool style of tricks, but never did. I broke my left arm skating. I had to wear a cast for 3 months. I also broke my truck while doing an Ollie off a curve, that was pretty cool. After I started to learn to play the Guitar(9th grade) I lost interest, and gained a lil' weight — |

Yeah Papa Surf. Rodney was it! I personally favored Kevin Harris' style. The guy flowed! My sister used to hang out and skate With the likes of Rodney Mullen and Greg Smith. Both My Sis as well as Greg were my teamates on Madrid Skateboards. My brother skated for Powell Peralta as a member of the Bones Brigade. |

Of course being from Canada, it was cool to see a fellow Canadian make it to the big time. In 1986 my good friend and skating buddy beat him at Expo 86 in the 360 competition (and was briefly the world 360 champion) now claimed by Richy Carrasco. He turned down offers to turn pro and went to University instead. He could easily have been where Kevin is today, he could skate vert and was excellent at freestyle, but that's another story. As for me, I was always third place in provincials in my age group, nowhere near good enough to skate with those guys. —https://www.facebook.com/index.php?lh=9353f9155b5ff32e14c998495fd00da4&#!/rich.derksen.7 |

Further to my previous post, I dug out the final standings for the 360 spinoff at Expo 86 in Vancouver.
Pretty good for an amateur from Winnipeg where there is snow on the ground for 150 days a year. —https://www.facebook.com/index.php?lh=9353f9155b5ff32e14c998495fd00da4&#!/rich.derksen.7 |
