While we await that answer . . .

I got these images off of gbase. The seller calls them "Serviceman" guitars, Fender knockoffs made in the Philippines in the 60's to be sold to soldiers in Vietnam. Seems somehow at least tangential to the topic . . .

This is true. Knockoffs were made and the local servicemen, who were actually stationed in Manila at Clark or Subic, would go to Manila and hunt for these guitars.

Yes, I remember these knock-offs. I remember a small alley street in the heart of Manila where all of yhese were being sold, some even made to order to your specs. I think it was Raon St.

Awesome. I love this kind of thing. Does anyone remember the compilation LP, "Surf Behind the Iron Curtain"? Or the "Beach Party a-Go-Go" CD? The latter was a Japanese surf comp of '60s cuts.

I have two tapes of Indonesian surf music from the '60s, and there is a great article on Indo surf bands in "Dumb Angel Gazette 3." Then you have the Hawaiian surf battle albums. All the Australian, Midwest and East Coast surf stuff discussed in John Blair's book, Stephen McParland's books, and my own "Pop Surf Culture." I'm just totally fascinated with the other areas around the country and the globe that participated in the First Wave of Surf.

I've been watching a lot of '60s Mexican films lately, and there is a compilation of Mexican surf waiting to happen.

That's good to know, Rob.

Some of the fellows from the early 60s are still around in Manila, too, but they are getting fewer. Sometimes, I get together with some of them to play the old pieces.

Here's another vintage photo of RJ and the Riots, to supplement the one posted by beatmantony.

The rhythm guitarist of the Riots was Jimmie Colayco,who is the thin fennow with the Jazzmaster above, second from left. Jimmie Colayco can be coaxed to play ala Don Wilson, and still pretty much sounds like him, even now. Here's Jimmie at a show in 2009, playing rhythm for a Ventures piece on a Stratocaster.
