Just curious what are flat wound strings? Also what brand do you use? Ive been using ernie ball slinkys for years for no particular reason and just wondering what to try next.

Flat wound strings are are the lower 3 or 4 stings of a set wound with a flat, tape-like, winding. They have reduced overtones compared to roundwound strings, which are like the name says wound with a round, wiretype winding. Some strings are ground to have a flat surface, while the contact area of core and winding is as on a roundwound string. On my archtop Framus I have a set of Thomastiks, on the Jaguar I have Pyramids. Flatwounds that is.
