We don't have the karaoke phenomenon so bad here, or at least, I don't think so, although I'd probably be the last to know. But otherwise, I totally relate to what you're saying.
I'm in a city of 2.5 million people, and there's maybe half a dozen surf bands around here now. I play in two local bands, Bots is also in two, Trev's in a band (with Bots, actually). Some shows get a better turnout than others, but overall, I consider ourselves very fortunate (it's not quite like SoCal, but better than a lot of places). Not being able to hook up with decent people to play with, would be one of the most frustrating things I could imagine.
Our local scene is focused on a few clubs that will book old-style country, rockabilly and surf bands. If you can find clubs like that around where you live, there's likely to be guys playing them that you could start getting to know. If not, then you may have to consider moving. Or, start a family and teach your kids the surf beat, it might be quicker, from the sounds of things out there in NJ.

Hey that sounds like Denver, but just about exactly twice as big.

I miss those special gigs when drunken MILF's would do the wild thing on your leg while the band plays "Gimme Three Steps".
Well now, I don't know if those are special gigs or just hideously embarassing ones, but I've seen somewhat comparable things happen to surf bands. No, they were not playing "Gimme Three Steps" at the time, though. No, I don't remember what they were playing. This is more a function of alcohol than music per se, I think. Sort of a third set, after midnight sort of thing.

I had that happen, except instead of a MILF it was an ELF, and I was dressed as a rabbi

I've been to Tuscon, I thought it was a cool place. Drive north 30 minutes from the center of town and you are in the mountains.
Unfortunately I have this problem where I feel the need to live by large bodies of undulating water. For now, the Atlantic Ocean at the Jersey Shore will do. It gets worse..... I actually go out on a piece of foam and fiberglass and try to stand-up on top of the waves. My family tried an intervention, I think my ex-wife divorced me because of this.

How is surfing the Jersey shore ? Years ago, I would vacation down near Avalon/Stone Harbor and boogie board every day. Fun times.

Yeah I go to San Diego every summer for some surfing. I wish I could live there but for now I have to stay in Tucson.

Surfing at the Jersey Shore really stinks. I wouldn't go there. In fact I thinks they have such bad waves that everyone should just leave and go somewhere else, especially during the summer. Yep, worst waves I ever seen. Really bad, so I'm just letting you know so you are not disappointed. Couldn't pay me to surf there, no-siree-oh-bobolink. uhhh, uh.
There was a surf magazine article that highlighted a place called "Heaside Sights" (not its real name, of course) and soon after the break south of the pier was loaded with all kinds of kooks.
