How many of you out there have built guitars from parts in order to get exactly what you wanted (or thought you wanted)? What did you wind up with?

I have built from parts and kits I built my first from a kit from Stu-Mac years ago just to see how I would do and then I started getting Fender bodys necks etc.. to build what I wanted I have always been happy with them but have sold or traded them off,I found that I was always ready for a new project a couple months after I build one.You will get a lot better at working on guitars either way it goes, I say go for it.

Beautiful Guitar How Much time did it take you to build?

ONE YEAR !!

El Papu & los Fantasticos Reverberantes

Sweet looking guitar! I'm glad there's a thread for this, I am agonizing over doing a Fender neck + Warmoth body + Rothstein loaded pickguard, or just getting an American Deluxe Ash to replace my current one. They would probably be around the same price. Going more towards the Fender atm, for resale reasons, but a custom is really tempting.

I just spend the half of the cash than buying a MIJ jazz and making all the mods on it

I've built over 31 guitars in the last 5 years. Page down the Gear page see my latest, creation, Dick Dale meets Jeff Beck.

I've found I need to build a guitar to get what I want. Turns out, as far as Strats, the specs, hardware, etc. my favorite "production" Strat, is a JB Custom Shop. With a few changes and figured woods, I got what I want. For Jags, I built my last Jag with a "Fat" Warmoth neck.
One thing, that is exciting, is you don't really know how it will sound until you finally get one together, tweak it and dial it in. Then, usually, I'm pretty much pleasantly surprised. Very Happy

Nice. You have any CDs out?

Actually, I want the one in the bottom pic!!!!! Very Happy I like the purple from the lights. I'd love to build my own guitar...being that kind of inveterate tinkerer. Probably because I don't actually know whats involved.

I built the "FrankenTele" out of the following parts:

MIM Fender 1950s RI "Esquire" maple neck (C shape)
MIJ Fender 1951 RI Telecaster body in "tobacco burst"
Bigsby B5 Tremolo
Allparts Mustang style bridge and plate for Bigsby
Fender Custon Shop "No-Caster" pickups
custom "James Burton-style" 4-position wiring/selector: neck alone, both in-phase, both out-of-phase, bridge alone. orange drops, silver solder, cloth-sheathed wiring. american pots. top hat 4-position switch.
aluminum billet RCA jack
Allparts single ply pickguard
Dunlop strap locks
copper sheilding
Fender dome knobs
Fender chrome tone/volume/switch plate
Fender tweed case

The total project cost about US$600

the guitar sounds GREAT!...

it sounded so good, that i gave it to my pal Frank on his 40th birthday. Frank is a monster on the guitar, and the "FrankenTele" screams!

sorry, no photos of the build.

I've got a partscaster in the works. Had to knock off the parts gathering, to concentrate on Christmas buying. So far I've got a Warmouth Tele body with P90 pickup routes, along with routing for a Strat/Strat-style tremolo. I'll likely use the same Seymour Duncan P90 combination that was on the Fender TC-90, and currently on Fender's JA-90. Once I get that Tele built, I'll start collecting parts toward building a 12-string Telecaster Deluxe.

I just finished putting together a "Parts-rite" ie, a Mosrite from parts left over when the factory closed. Below is a picture of the guitar next to my '66 Ventures model and here's a link to extensive details of the construction saga:

Basic woodworking skills and patience will get you far. I'm no professional luthier by any stretch of the imagination but I wound up with a guitar that suits my tastes, plays well and looks half decent from 10 feet away.

Big Papu: That is the coolest guitar! Good work.

I didn't build this myself:

A not expensive partscaster tele, but the guy who did build it did it right, used great parts and set it up just so. Has a thin nitro finished Warmoth neck (perfect), a spruce topped, chambered body by Chandler, all Glendale bridge/saddles, plus the topper, Don Mare 2324 (Nancy) pickups. Tonally and in playability, it's one of the best teles I've ever played.

Love the red Jag, Bengal. What kind of bike is that??

I've got the info to build a channel switch pedal for my amp. Like to go to BYOC and build a pedal of some sort.
