2008 was a crappy year in lots of ways, but not for surf music fans, lots of new music and international tours (let's hope for the best in 2009!)

I personally think that 2008 has been the best year for surf music since the peaks of the nineties. It seems that it's on the slight upswing in terms of visibility, but more importantly we saw a large amount of absolutely wonderful releases. As far as I'm concerned, I think the Barbwires' "Searider", Frankie & the Poolboys and Los Twang! Marvels' "Jungle of Twang" are among the very best surf CDs of this decade. And many other very cool CDs came out, too. If our beloved genre continues in this direction in the future, we'll be in very good shape indeed!!

I played guitars with freakin' PAUL freakin' JOHNSON live and freakin' IN-PERSON on the freakin' stage at the freakin' SG101 Convention...HOLY CRAP!... 2008 was a monster year for surf in my book!
Also, I met more than 200 surf-crazy SG101 wackos up-close and personal at the convention...they are even cooler in-person then they are in the virtual web realm! Amazing stuff.
I think the SG101 2008 PersonOfTheYear Award should definitely be awarded to Big Tiki Dude for his success at pulling off this momumental event.
ps: Happy 2009!

Who's the devil's advocate who thought this was a bad year? I've never had so much surf and pseudo-surf on my year-end list in the FOUR-ISH years I've been into this. Those of you that didn't release in '08, the bar has been raised, you gotta put some thought into this year

Let's not forget about The Atomic Mosquitoes release, "Meltdown", which snuck in during the final days of 2008. I haven't ordered my copy yet (but I will in the next few days), but the samples I've heard are great.

It has been a great year for the Surfites but I wouldn't call it "great" for the genre as a whole; good - yes, but not great.

even though we had a Brian-hosted kinda pilot-episode #1 in 2007, basically 2008 is the year of birth of the podcast-as-we-know-it, produced by mr. and mrs. Reverb. and we've had 4 incredible podcasts in a good half year!

So, Klas, you curmudgeon you, what exactly would have to happen for a year to qualify as being 'great' for surf music? (I'm especially curious as I know you don't want surf music to become any more popular.)
I don't think all Swedes are downers, right? C'mon, be happy, be alive, enjoy the new music! Especially as some great stuff was done by your own countrymen!

Hey, I did say it has been a "good" year for surf music!
And I definitely would like surf music to become more popular by expanding further among fans of related genres.
What makes me worried these days is that sometimes it appears as the focus for surf music has changed from who can drink the most beer to who can play the most scales...
