Actually, he also has a movie soundtrack thing going on. Especially since he is a musician and life on the road is hard on the body. Ivan, his wikipedia page states he is a Jehovah's Witness. 1.) Is this true and 2.) Was he born such, or did he convert at one point. |

Ryan, yep, he seems to be done with all the rock'n'roll stuff and his real passion is gypsy jazz. He's been attending gypsy jazz conventions in France, and has been playing with this combo for a couple of years, though as far as I know only in Australia so far. Though, there's a Cliff Richard and the Shadows final reunion tour this summer or fall. My guess is that's the final thing Hank will do with the Shadows. I get the feeling he would have preferred to be done with it since the eighties, but the money has been too good.

It's true, he's a Jehovah's Witness, and no, he wasn't born into a family of JW. He actually converted sometime in the mid-sixties, while in the Shadows. I think an important factor in Hank's conversion was Licorice Locking, the Shads' second bass player who was with them from '62 until '64. Anyway, Hank is in great physical and mental shape, he's never been one to abuse his body. And as you can tell from these videos, he can play better than ever! It's nice to see him pursuing his passions even as he nears 70.... —Ivan |

wow. I think I like this more then anything he ever did with the shadows. (sorry Ivan). though technically, the average 12 yr old gipsy guitarist will blow him out of the water, he really brings something to the music. I think you're right Ivan, his heart really lies here. —Rules to live by #314: |

I just wish they'd swap the accordionist for some violin, I have a real aversion to accordions... but it sounds pretty good.

Glad you enjoyed it, Wannes. You're probably right about the young gypsy jazz guys, but Hank does pretty well! It takes a lot of technique and musical knowledge to be able to play that stuff. As far as the Shadows, we'll have to work on you a bit....
I suspect it's pretty damn hard to find a good Grapelli-style violinist - especially in Perth, Australia!
Oh yeah, Joscho is amazing. Most of those gypsy jazz guys are amazing, and I like the music - for about an hour or so. Then it starts getting a bit boring. Probably how a most non-surf fans feel about surf music... Ivan |

Yep. I don't think one can call themselves a real aficionado of any genre until you can sort out the sub-genre's by ear. I'm still working on that for surf myself, though it isn't too hard to spot a real classic tune I've never heard from a newer 2nd+ wave one, or a "horror surf" one from a more "rock surf" one. Are there many of these types of branches in surf? — |

Those clips are impressive. I'm renewing my interest in Gypsy Jazz as of late and this is a pretty impressive showing IMHO. I'm hardly an accordian fan, no Myron Floren tattoos or anything, but it works in this context. BTW, the accordian was the dominant instrument in French clubs about the time Django came along. Before the accordian it was the bagpipe! I actually see some similarities to Surf in Gypsy Jazz. Both of them benefit greatly from a strong right hand. It challenges the right hand too with lots of arppegios and the like. Just found this site by accident whilst browsing the subject of Hank Marvin and Jazz, for a new Squidoo Lens ( a single page website) which I am putting together The videos have introduced a side of Hank I have never come across. I knew he liked jazz but never heard of his concerts in this gendre. Would like to thank you for pointing me in the direction of these vids —A life long fan of the Shadows and their style of music |
