I just bought their only release and I'm really excited finally hearing it (hasn't arrived yet). There was a discussion about it on Cowabunga a couple of years ago involving John Blair and Phil Dirt.
(The album also includes the two often-leased Dick Dale pre-surf vocals).
Anyone else have it or heard it?
From the Reverb Central review:
Most of the music here is raw and immediate. Given the quick turn creation, the tunes are not as jammy as the stuff that came from the usual Hollywood suspects, and certainly sports some real energy and creativity.

I was lucky enough to find a copy of the Hollywood Surfers "Surf Family" LP years ago, from an on-line retailer. I cant remember where, but since the LP is so rare, I grabbed right away. The album is great, aside from the Dick Dale vocals, which are always just ok, but can easily go without. Its the rare surf LPs like this one (and Dick Dales "Summer Surf" LP) that I would love to see re-issued on CD. In short, its a great LP, that I would not want to be without. King of the Stomp, in particular, is a great obscure instrumental in my opinion, and probably the highlight of the album. Congradulations on finding a great and rare surf LP!

I had the impression the album was super rare but there are actually two copies up on eBay right now:
Buy It Now $30
Buy It Now $200
Dick Dale's "Summer Surf" will get a CD reissue from Sundazed during 2007 but I don't think we'll ever get to see the Hollywood Surfers album reissued.

I won one of the other two auctions. Looking forward to it quite a bit. Did you get your copy yet, Klas?

Received my copy yesterday. Totally cool album with raw, energy filled performances. My initial favorites are "The King Of The Stomp", "Doheney Drums" and the crazy "Garbage Pit".

Phil Dirt just mentioned on Cowabunga the other day that (Ron Eglit
recently of DD bass player fame, and of Adrien and the Sunsets in the
60's) was on the Hollywood Surfers LP. is that true., from what you can tell Klas?

The album doesn't list any band member credits. Judging by their screams, they sound like teenagers. I read elsewhere that Paul Johnson was involved and that the whole album was recorded in 1½ hours.

I'm pretty sure that Paul and Ron Eglit will be at the Surf Museum for the Surf Drumming DVD release party this Sun.
I'll ask them about it.

The Surf Family album was Produced by Dick Hug Aka Huggy Boy a local L.a. Disc jocky at the time. He had the rights to a few Dick Dale cuts and hired us to fill out the album. We cut the stuff at Gold star studios in L.A. in about 2 hours. We had no idea what we were going to do and only a few of the cuts were ever thought of before we got in the studio. We were just hired guns that got paid for the tracks and got no credit for anything. For the most part we just rolled tape and started jamming. Larry Carney our lead guitar player was very imaginative and just came up with most everthing on the spot. He played my Strat which was the second prototype Leo built in 1953. Paul Johnson had nothing to do with the album, I didn't even know who he was untill years later. The other people on the tracks were Jessie on drums, me on bass and kenny StJohn on the other guitar. The 2 sax players were Tony and Rudy.We were not even a surf band at the time but faked it pretty good. I think we got $20.00 a piece for the session which at the time was what we made for a 5 hour gig so we were quite happy. The name of the album was a take off on a popular comedy album at the time called "The first Family" that Dick Hug liked and thought the similer names would get attention. I still have my promotional copy of the album and have only played it a few times since back then. I didn't like it then and thought it was just junk, perhaps I will have to give it a new listen 45 years later to see if got any better.

After getting out the album to refresh my memory I forgot that John Gardel was the producer , Dick Hug owned the label. We also had a couple of sax players that we worked with occasionally on those sessions and not our regular drummer. Larry Carney was the lead guitar player.

As a side note. The lead guitar on those tracks is a 53 Strat, probably the second prototype made by Leo Fender in late 53 and given to my father in 54 or so by a friend of his that worked at Fender. The guitar has been in my family since.

I haven't got my turn table hooked up. I haven't used it in 20 years. It will be a day or so before I get it out and listen.
