Extended barre chord practice ended my classical guitar studies years ago ... developed carpal tunnel and couldn't get around it. Was luckily able to continue in other playing styles, but have had some lingering left wrist problems.

It does take time. You also have to avoid the urge to overdo it too soon. There's times when it's much better to play little or not at all.

I dont feel quite so clumsy and accident prone after reading all of these horror stories (though to be honest i really am) I sliced the top off my left ring finger with a hedge trimmer - what a bleeder, took so long to heal and couldnt bend or slide at all. Fourtunately its nicely calloused now. Then whilst working in a galllery i drilled into my left hand - yes really - and that was where my relationship with power tools ended!
