I attended SANTA'S 2008 SURFIN' SAFARI at the ZEN BAR in Farmington Connecticut this past Saturday December 13 2008

image

It was a NESMA SUMMIT of 3 bands - The Clams, The 9th Wave, and SPF-4 (NESMA = North East Surf Music Alliance, www.nesmasurf.org)

While there, I shot 11 videos!! Yeah, 11!! They are all posted on my YouTube page, http://www.youtube.umsteadyfreddie

I will now break down the videos to 3 groupings for the 3 bands that performed;

first up, were THE CLAMS, a great trio from Connecticut led by Dan Surkis

Second to hit the stage at The Zen Bar were SPF-4, a great band from New England whom I have not seen perform in way way way too long! The guys have been writing performing and recording new ORIGINAL material, and it's top-shelf stuff!! Dig them in their festive Holiday red plaid matching shirts, complete with dickeys!!

The evening's festivities finished off with Connecticut's hot-rod surf combo, THE 9th WAVE. This band always gives a great performance, and didn't disappoint at The Zen Bar.

hoping to get out to HOBOKEN NJ this Friday for a double-bill of PURPLE K'NIF and THE LOST PATROL, and add a bunch more videos to my YouTube page; I will post an announcement under a separate thread in the 'Surf Video' forum once all the videos are processed and are ready for viewing

am also going to try and put together a FLICKR file from the ZEN BAR gathering on 12-13-08

Thanks for posting, but more importiantly shooting those great videos, Unsteady Freddie! I see a style emerging in your cinematography...

Really glad you shot Parabolic! That's the first time I've ever played with my dickie hanging out, and I must say it was liberating.

It was great to see you again, yes it has been too long. We must come down to NYC soon.

Rob

thx Rob

let me say this: SPF-4 is such an amazing band! watching you guys evolve from a mostly-cover-band into what now appears to be a group that is writing such great original material -- is quite wonderful

there is nothing wrong with being a cover band, by the way, in my opinion

but for a band to grow, mature, and make a name (and sound) for itself, original material should start making its way into a band's repertoire, as is the case with you guys

BRAVO for all this fabuloso music!!

oh, let me ask you, you spelled the clothing article you wore as DICKIE, I spelled it as DICKEY -- apparently both forms are acceptable!!

I mean, who knew?

one can learn so much about so many things at SG101, right?

it was a joy to see you perform, and to record some of the songs, so others can now see you 4 wonderful musicians on my YouTube page!

and don't make me beg.....come to NYC soon and be part of a SURF-ROCK SHINDIG at OTTO's in 2009!!

I haven't had time to watch all the vids yet.
but thanks for capturing all these bands.
Wish more people did that out here.

Jeff(bigtikidude)

some great stuff there, Jeff

I know you're gonna dig it

please take a little time at some point to view them, and let me know what U think....

I am having a blast making these videos!

be cool....

Thanks Unsteady Freddie.... glad you like our new tunes.

Covers lead the way to originals.... but we are young. Guys our age writing original tunes is unusual. ;)

Again I say how much I dig your visual aproach.... Nice "thought provocing" starts, intesting, stylistic UF opening visuals! And the sound holds up, even when you switch left side of the stage to right....

Thanks, keep up the great work. Surf fans should enjoy these vids...... through your eyes we get to see more contemporary surf than most fans ever will.
