I kinda dig it.
_"When we first listened to this track on an unlabeled CD-R, we thought maybe it was a lost track from some teenage sixties garage band that had somehow covered "Smells Like Teen Spirit" through some Back to the Future-Christopher Lloyd time travel episode. But it was apparently recorded at a tequila-fueled session, that none of us remembered!
Apparently between listening to vinyl from Pedro Del Mar's personal collection, and recording our forthcoming album of original material (due in April 2009) we took a moment bash out this brain-numbing version of "Smells Like Teen Spirit." This time-travelling mash-up of Nirvana, The Sonics and Chuck Berry, should be played loud! "_

Gotta disagree, UF...
I listened to this twice. To my ears it was a cool idea, very poorly executed. And I am a huge LSJ fan. I've seen them dozens of times live and have most of their albums.
Am I the only one that thinks this sounds like crap? Maybe it's just me.

It sounds like a ringtone. It is really bad. The guitars sound horrible, the beat was abysmal, and it was a pretty nasty arrangement overall.

I actually liked it a little. Yeah I agree the arrangement could've been made more instrumental-friendly, but overall it's pretty fun, and I just figured the nastiness of the sound was the point. It's got a nice crunch to it.

I wasn't thrilled with the mix, actually
and didn't say I liked the song
just said, 'pretty wild'
b/c the thought of covering Nirvana by Los StJax seemed like such an unlikely idea
I think the tune sounds a bit murky, like I said earlier, I thought the mix was kind of awkward
it is NOT like this band to record a song like this, so maybe it suggests they are willing to experiment, stretch out from what people are accustomed to hearing from them?
I am hopeful they see this thread and people's reactions to the song
hope that clarifies where I stand on this tune?

I kinda liked the raw feel of the song and the pounding drums,
but there is a guitar part(I assume- that sounds more like a digital keyboard-overdriven some how) and that made me cringe.
sounded like a very raw demo version.

Sounds like live take demos we use to do in my bedroom with a 4 track recorder.

actually they said they don't even remember when they recorded this, so we should assume it's only one of those songs that you record with your band when you're just experimenting or something.
and I think the bad quality partially it's because it's a streaming file.
That front cover it's a shame though, hahaha

I get a sense that isn't a serious comment, just a 'humorous' way to explain why the song sounds the way it does, from their perspective?

I'm not hearing the Sonics in that. At all.

I really don't think this is a song that should be covered - the original is good for what it is, but I've never heard a cover version that works. It's a song that's more about attitude, and the shocking rawness of it amongst what was being released in the early 90's, but it isn't a great melody. I don't have a problem with the style or production they used, but an original melody, or a better melody from a different song, would have worked much better.

Plus "smells like teen spirit" was a rip off of "80's" by Killing Joke anyways.

You mean "Come as You Are" ripped of the riff. I can never tell if there is interweb sarcasm going on.
Anyways, the cover is fun. Don't get your panties in bunch if it isn't the most mindblowing instrumental cover ever.
Like it says, they were probably just drunk having a good time.

I must be some kind of idiot because I thought this was a pretty interesting take on it and kind of fun. My only real problem was that the guitar playing the vocal lines was just kind of flat and souless, just plucking out the notes

Exactly! That is why I found it awful. If I wanted to listen to interesting souless music I'd turn the radio on to hip hop or uber-produced Britney Spears songs.
