Permalink Surf rock bands with vocals?

New Topic
Goto Page: 1 2 Next

I love the surf guitar sound and vibe. But I have not come across any bands with the surf guitar sound with lead vocals. Can anyone suggest some bands I should look for?

The Volcanics.

Check out The Raveonettes album "Lust, Lust,Lust". Not a surf band, but an alt-rock band with Jazzmasters and lotsa reverb.

Sorry, I re-read the original post and it was supposed to be surf bands. That's why I don't usually post because I make dumb mistakes like that. Duh!

The album is awesome so people should check it out. And, if they want an album with a "surf" tone that sounds better than any surf guitar they should check out Pretty in Black by the Raveonettes. I'd give my right nut to get that and anybody else would be crazy not to take that tone.

Some would differ, but The Dead Kennedys. Well they were more a punk band with surf influences.

Also, I think the Wipers have a surf quality to the earlier stuff ... lots of reverb and one string melodies. Also, an indie band with surf influences.

Man or Astroman? had a few vocal songs.

B-52s ~ a vocal band with surf influences.

Many of the 1st wave surf bands had some vocals too...

(defunct) Thee Jaguar Sharks

Also, the Astronauts were a surf band who also had vocals going on.

I have to admit that song"Love In A Trashcan" kicks some major ass.

Reverb, It's A Way Of Life!

Smile I have the Astronauts Rarities album. And it's got a bunch of vocals. I'm not sure as to which vocals are actually theirs, but "Tomorrows gonna be Another Day" is great. And "Buy me a Round" kicks ass, although the drums never actually come in, but it would have made the song way better.

The Deadbeats

If you want overproduced, fourth-rate Jesus & Mary Chain knockoffs then I'd recommend the Raveonettes.

If you want actual surf vocals, I'd start with Untamed Youth, the Volcanics and the Thunderchiefs for more recent stuff.

That was excessively violent and completely unnecessary. I loved it.

Cool. Then I'm not the only one who hears a kind of surf quality in their music?

Thanks for all of the recommendations! I haven't had a chance yet to look up these bands yet, but I will over the weekend.

Though more Tiki Lounge than surf, The Blue Hawaiians have some great vocal tunes.

I think so, he used lots of echoplex and had some surfy lines. I wonder if East Bay Ray listened to them.

Getting back to the topic, my favorite vocal stuff is the Gary Usher produced Super Stocks, Hondells, and the vocal stuff he did with the Surfaris.

We can't forget to mention Dick Dale's vocal work!

The Beach Boys may be classified as vocal surf or beach music or whatever but they introduced me to anything "surf" related.
