Permalink anybody use the Line 6 Echo Park pedal?

New Topic
Goto Page: 1 2 Next

So, I've been thinking of picking up the Line 6 Echo Park pedal. I don't live very close to a music store, so I can't just go and check it out in person. I know there are several people on here that have them, though, including Ferenc. What do you all think of them? I'm particularly interested in their tape/multi-tap setting. Does it sound anything like the old sixties European multi-head tape echo units?

BTW, Guitar Player magazine is very complimentary in their review. The pedal even got the Editor's Pick Award.

Thanks in advance!

Ivan, I love them. They sound great and are STURDY! I use two of them- one with a cold slap and the other with a long delay, and I have them close enough together that I can step on both at the same time to switch. A great sounding and really versatile unit!!!

I don't know anything about the Line 6, but I just recently got a Danelectro Reel Echo and so far, I'm pretty impressed.

So far, I've only tried it out at bedroom levels on the little champ 600, but I've been able to come pretty close to some Hank Marvin tones with it. It takes a bit of dialing in to get there, but it does offer quite a bit of variety. I'm anxious to try it at a bigger amp volume and see if it still holds up.

I have an old Boss DM-2 that's starting to crap out on me, so I've been trying out other options. I also have a Digitech Digidelay, but I've never been real crazy about it.

I had heard a lot of good things about the MXR carbon copy, but I tried one out in the store and was not that impressed, sounded very digital too me.

I love the DM-2. My favorite pedal. Don't want to spend $200-$250 on a new one? It is just $50-$100 more than a carbon copy. Also, an amp tech can probably fix the DM-2 for you no problem.

Ivan, I agree with Ferenc on the pedal. Tonally I think the majority of digital delays sound great(as long as you don't want it to sound like an analog delay). However, the Line 6 is built as well as anything short of a Boss. And the Line 6 has a ton of options I'm sure you know about already. When I bought a digital delay I got the Boss Space Echo, I regretted it at first since it kind of sucks(a lot) for double picked lead, but it sounds gorgeous for sustained chords. Line 6 does quite well with double picked lead.

I love the DM-2 too, and I'll probably get it fixed, especially considering the prices they go for now days. It doesn't really sound like a tape echo to me though. It's got a sound of its own dark and spacey, which is cool!

Thanks, Ferenc and Jake. I really appreciate that. I went and watched a few demo clips on YouTube, and I think this pedal is exactly what I want. The tape setting sounds phenomenal, and the multitap echoes are really good. And the price is right! ($109 - $25 coupon I have with Sweetwater - so, $84 for the new one - not bad!) I'm glad to hear that you both like yours.

My trusty Korg Dynamic Echo has started shorting, and given that I've played it and gigged with it constantly for the last ten years, I'm thinking it's time to retire it. I'll probably still try to get it fixed, cause I love its sound, but for live purposes I needed something else, something that would do a really good emulation of a tape echo, and if it could do the multitap stuff well also, it would be downright amazing. I think the Echo Park is the pedal for me.

Thanks, Paul, for the recommendation for the Danelectro, too, but I must admit that I just don't trust Danelectro pedals as far as their reliability. In addition, it doesn't have the multitap setting, it's quite a bit bigger than the Echo Park AND more expensive. So, I'll go with the Echo Park.

Thanks again!

Ivan, keep us posted on what you think of the Line 6 when you have a chance to put it through its paces. I've been keeping my eye out for something that gives a decent emulation of tape echo as well.

True, the Dano is ridiculously big and clunky. I got a scratch and dent one from MF so it was only $115. I have yet to put it through the real sound test, but so far it really nails that vintage tape echo better than any pedal I've tried.

The Echo Park looks intriguing too, similar but much better features than my Digitech, I'll be interested to hear your report too.

I own a Reel Echo, and used to own an Echo Park copy, which is pretty close to the real deal.

My thoughts:

The Dano doesn't do the fine detailed modeling that the EP does - the interesting oscillations or the tape warble simulations or any of that. The Echo Park is very fun to play with. However, I like the overall tone of the Dano better - the repeats are very pretty, and though the tone control is hard to dial in, it does make things very warm. No tone control on the EP.

I don't like the Dano's warble setting - it just sounds like a chorus.

Both are good, but I ended up keeping the Dano because what I wanted most was tone control on the repeats. That and it just looks awesome.

I also have a Dano Dan-Echo. It's nice, but the Reel Echo is much nicer.

I used to have the Korg as well - it's really a great pedal. My switch started to go out, and it developed noise problems though. I sold it, but if I had it now I would try to fix it instead - it's really got some unique features.

The EP is definitely more versatile. But the Dano Reel Echo (& Spring King) are actually constructed pretty solidly - metal jacks not mounted to the board, etc. Much better construction than most of their other pedals.

I bought the Echo Park a few months back and it's one of the pedals I use all the time. I use it in the "slap" position rather than the "tap", but the "tap" does get used.

I had an old Echoplex and the Echo Park is definitely more of a clean echo compared to the EchoPlex (the plex is warm and has some wow and flutter to it). Secondly when the pedal is in bypass, I found my pedal boosts the signal a bit, cleanly though so the boost is not undesirable or all that tone altering (Strat or Tele with flats).

Personally I am very happy with the Echo Park. It is extremely versatile and very well made. It would be really terrific if they could made a little memory in it so you could save some presets.

I also use it with a Line 6 Verbzilla, Barber Tone Press and a Voodoo Labs pedal switcher to take the pedals in/off of the circuit. The only other item I use is a BBE Supacharger to ensure all the power lines are quiet.

I used to have an Echo Park. It was pretty good but I now use the M13 line6 stomp box modeler for non-surf which contains all their pedals including the Echo Park (or DL4) and Verbzilla. For surf I use just Carl Martin Red Repeat plus Surf Trem ... and a tank.

A pedal I used to have that did a great Multi Head sim was the AKAI Headrush looper. It even had seperate outs for each head if you wanted some wild effects. Once, I set up all my amps for each of the four outputs . It sounded great as the multiple heads bounced around the room. Wish I hadn't sold that pedal actually as it was a lot of fun ... but I had accumlated a lot of looping pedals and wasn't using that one. You could change the rhythm of the multi-repeats.

Youth and enthusiasm are no match for age and treachery.

I tried one in the store today and bought it along with the guitar I was testing. It is heavy, solid and can run on a battery. I mostly used the Tape setting with a multi head mode and it sounded great with the Strat and Blues Jr. I haven't had a chance yet to really play with settings, there are a lot of them, but I think I can already recommend this. At that price you can't go wrong.

Ivan,
Did you ever get one these?

Paul, I did get one. The first one was defective, which was annoying, but I replaced it, and the second one is working properly. In the 'tape-echo' mode, the sound is exactly the same as my custom settings on my old Korg Dynamic Echo (which has a lot of flexibility with all the Hi-Cut, Lo-Cut, Hi-Fi/Lo-Fi controls), which I've been using for over 10 years. So, that really made me very happy! I can see myself using this pedal for gigging very easily. As far as the multitap/staggered-head echo settings, the two built-in patterns are pretty cool and though I've not played with it enough to be able to say how useful they are, they seem to be patterned on classic '60s Euro tape echo machines, so I think it'll come in handy at some point.

The one downside of the pedal is that it's kinda bulky. Also, I've gotten really spoiled with my Korg's two presets, never having to worry about dialing in the pedal controls exactly right, which obviously I have to do here. But overall, I'm very pleased with the pedal. For my money it's by far the best of the reasonably-priced echo pedals on the market if you're after replicating the sound of the sixties tape-echo machines.

Hopefully not too off-topic here: has anyone tried the Boss DD- 20?
I´m seriously considering getting that for dwelling into Shadowland.

A tip for you DM-2 fans ... grab the Retrosonic analog delay. It has the most beautiful analog delay sound, all the clarity you usually have to go digital to get, all the warmth you would expect from something modelled on the DM-2. Longer delay times though (up to 800ms), and wonderful controls. Has a tone voicing knob which makes it so much more versatile. Great pedal. Not cheap, but worth it.

while I was searching for the line 6 echo Park pedal, I hit paydirt on craigslist and I'm picking it up tomorrow here in NYC. Used for $60. I really like the pedal myself and can't wait to use it.

While at home, I have one of those old 70's Univox EC80A Echo Chamber boxes. Does my age show? haha. Got it out of storage and tried it. The unit works, BUT....the 2 tapes I have don't work. Both tape and heads are worn out from just sitting. I have looked all over the net and the company went out of business a long time ago. or some company was making the tapes for outlandish price. maybe I can rig up a loop tape and get new tape from a cassette??? Anybody have ideas, I'm open on how to fix the tape.

Have any of you Echo Park users experienced excess noise/hiss with the pedal? I'm thinking about picking one up, but have read quite a few complaints about this.

I had the Verbzilla. I think the noise comes if you don't use a wall wart. The Line 6 stuff doesn't play well with daisy chain type power supplies - at least most units don't.
