Hey gang, Eddie has a question.........After my trips to California and DC this year it became apparent that I really needed a small amp that I could stuff in a suitcase and make some reasonable surf sounds when I get to my destination. I have a vintage Pignose and with the Guyatone delay, it sounds "ok" at super low volumes but just doesn't cut it for jammin' with others.
I was looking at the Roland Cube 15X. Anyone got any experience with one of these? Mom Surfin' brought along a GDec and a small Vox to DC for jammin' after hours, but something about the Roland has caught my attention..............
Thanks,
ed

I've had the Roland Micro Cube for sometime. It will run on batteries as well. You can get some pretty good "Blackface" tones out of it and the effects are pretty good. It's my traveling amp of choice. (The Pignose collects dust in the closet )

million dollar idea
Fold out speaker cabinet. With a neo speaker and crate powerblock you'd be golden.

Here is a recent Guitar Player comparison of the Micro Cube vs. the Line 6 Mini Spider.

Grand idea Daniel my good man. I just pack my clothes in the back of a speaker cabinet, stuff in the Powerblock, screw the back on, plop on the "Tuki" cover, lug it to the airport,................check the "baggage", chuck the screwdriver........buy a new screwdriver when I get to my destination, take off the back, remove the amp and my clean underwear......................ah well, It sounded good to begin with.

I use the Roland Micro Cube also...it's a pretty decent battery powered amp with on-board effects...

I've heard good things about the Vox DA 5. I suspect it's in the same league as the Cube.

I haven't tried a Cube, but I love my Vox DA5! If I'm medically cleared to deploy to Iraq, sometime in 2009, it's going with me, along with my Squier Affinity Tele (with a few "surfy" mods). Depending who all in my unit actually brings a guitar, we could try to get a band together during off duty time.

Would a Princeton reverb fit in a suitcase? Or one of those small blues jrs? To be perfectly honest I would never plug into any of those small practice amps again. They remind me of my old Crate, but worse.
You don't always need an amp! I've plugged in twice in a month and a half.

Wow Surfabilly! Thanks for your service to our country. I was stationed in DC in '71 and several of us put together a "band." Two of us from the Army, one Navy dude and an Air Force guy who played drums. We all lived in the tri-service barracks at Ft Myer. The guy from the Navy got permission for us to practice in the loft above the hangar where the Presidental helicopters were kept. What a hell of a noise it made in that metal building! There is NO WAY enlisted guys could pull off a stunt like that today! We were terrible but our singer went on to greater things. Check out John Starnes web site. Blackest white guy I ever played in a band with.........................Damn could (can) he sing!
Once again..........Thanks!

Champion 600 is about the same size, isn't it? Unless you're looking for the battery & the modeling.

I have one of these at my desk at work! Sounds like crap, but certainly does the trick if you don't require a lot.

You pretty much had me "out gunned" in DC so I'm looking for Revenge!
I have a little micro amp similar the the Fender pictured, but it's pretty much distorto deluxe. I'm looking for something to get a nice round clean tone.....

On a few occasions I have traveled in my work. Once I was in a piss hole of a town in the northeast for about 2 months that had no recreational options to speak of. Went to a pawn shop next door to the motel and got a ragged Squire Strat and some kind of Vox looking knock off amp for $200.
The amp hand no name on it but it wailed pretty good for what it was. At the end of 2 months when time to leave carried the stuff to another pawn shop down the street and got $80 dollars for it. Folded the $120 onto motel expense report and came back home. For me, why buy and carry battery powered when you can "lease" AC powered and write off the residual.

That Blues Junior is a fantastic amp, but I think it's probably way bigger than what you are looking for. Have you thought about that little 5W Fender Champ? It might still be a little big for what you're looking for, but could be worth looking at. Besides, they sure are great looking!!

I HIGHLY recommend the Champion 600!
Really nice round tube tone.
Sounds best when plugged into tank, but the tank is bigger than the amp!
But it ain't bad with a Holy Grail either.
You could always drag yourself into a Guitar Center or something and try 'em out?

Yep Skeet.............one has to DRAG Eddie Katcher into Guitar Center (kicking AND screaming).
Was kinda hoping to grab a complete playable package. Last year leaving the 101 convention, My bag was so heavy with t-shirts, CD's books and goodies, that Karol and I had to repackage our baggage to get on the plane.................

I can't enough good things about the Vox DA5. The clean and low level blues settings are great. The reverb and tremolo are excellent.
