At our last show, a guy told us that his professor at Cuyamaca College played Secret Samurai's (our) CD to somehow explain the origins of rap
I have a sneaky suspicion that this teacher is on sg101...but whoever and wherever you are Professor, thanks for your support!
All your students should be required to pay a lab fee that will cover the cost of various surf CDs. ![Laughing Laughing](/media/smiley/images/icon_lol.gif)

I'd like to see some academic draw a line from surf to rap, anyone?

Secret Samurai is so bad that it led an entire cultural group to create a brand new genre of music.
Of course I think it is a great album and I am not allowed to teach a college course on music history.

After my history of rock teacher described surf rock with the beach boys I decided to ride his ass with surf trivia as far as I could go. Usually I would just come up at the end of class and say something like "that 'studio musician' Jerry Cole that you're talking about...."
The furthest I got was "That rap song 'Apache'......."

Ha ha ha! Yeah, I'm not quite sure what the link is. I actually think that Zak had much more to do with the creation of the rap genre than The Secret Samurai did ![Wink Wink](/media/smiley/images/icon_wink.gif)

I'd like to see some academic draw a line from surf to rap, anyone?
I think I can explain it with some basic trigonometry:
(1) secant² surf music(4θ) / 2 - secant² (4θ) = -1/2 *(sec²(4θ))
(2) tan(x)/(1-cot(x)) + cot(x)/(1-tan(x)) secret samurai
= /(1-cot(x))(1-tan(x))
= / (1-tan(x)-cot(x)+cot(x)tan(x))
= sin(x)/cos(x) - sin²(x)/cos²(x) + cos(x)/sin(x) - cos²(x)/sin²(x) / 2-tan(x)-cot(x)
= /cos²(x)sin²(x)/ 2-tan(x)-cot(x)
= /cos²(x)sin²(x)/ 2-tan(x)-cot(x)
= [sin(x)cos(x) -1]/cos²(x)sin²(x)/ 2-tan(x)-cot(x)
= sin(x)cos(x) -1 / cos²(x)sin²(x)(2-sin(x)/cos(x)-cos(x)/sin(x))
= sin(x)cos(x) -1/ 2cos²(x)sin²(x) - sin3(x)cos(x) -cos3(x)sin(x)
= sin(x)cos(x) -1/ 2cos²(x)sin²(x) - sin(x)cos(x)(sin²(x) + cos²(x))
= sin(x)cos(x) -1 /sin(x)cos(x)(2sin(x)cos(x)-1)
= 1/2*csc(x)sec(x)
= sec (Secret Samurai) + sin (Ryan) + cos (Lil' Wayne) + tan (on-stage together)
= RAP
Can someone double check my math?

That was actually close. But unfortunately it doesn't hold up to a proof by induction. You would first have to find the first derivitave of the square root of ( f(the secret samurai - kool mo dee)2). Since this function is recursive, there is no finite answer. So I think it stands that there is no connection between the Secret Samurai and rap. Sorry fellas. I wanted it to be true too.

I'd quite like to have a go at this but I have to go out to a gig. Maybe I'll have a bash when I come home if no-ones done it by then...

This story has been told before a few times, but for who hasnt seen it here goes.
The Space Cossacks played a show in San Diego at the Tiki House, and
during one of their songs this black guy kept yelling out for them to sing something. Ivan shook his head no, and the guy seemed kind of upset and to liven things up a bit, he jumped on stage with them and proceeded to lay down some raps over the song the Space Cossacks were playing.
I was rollin, too f**kin funny.
some people in the audience didn't like it and asked me to drag him off the stage, I said nah, let him have his fun.
Ivan seemed to enjoy it too.

I must've been absent that day from class. I had a blind calculus/trig professor in college. (true story) We weren't allowed to use calculators, but we did sneak them in on tests. As a result, I got a B in the class but didn't learn S#%T.
Perhaps I can apply Baye's Therom to draw a proper academic line?

Surf Music is melody and no lyrics. Rap is lyrics and no melody. The two forms seem to exist on parallel lines with no intersection point. If we move to fields of Non-Euclidean Geometries, where parallel lines meet at infinity, then we have a better chance of showing a connection. The Secret Samurai - Rap connection would follow.
