I agree with all the enthusiasts on this thread. I've talked about it many times and love it as one of the best cult music movies ever done.
The point I like to make is that the movie is a treasurechest of cultural idiosyncracies of those times.
For musicians, the subtle changeover from Silvertone to Fender equipment does not go unnoticed ![Wink Wink](/media/smiley/images/smilewinkgrin.gif)
It is well known that Tom Hanks is an avid instro Surf music fan. I hope to see him do other "period" pieces where there may be a need for Surf as background. Who knows?

I am aware that History for Hire, a big prop-house in North Hollywood provided amps, drums and mics for the film, from Jim's large collection of incredible "artifacts." He is not sure exactly which scenes his equipment was used in.
Interestingly, they had bought all the china when "the hotel that Lucy and Ricky stayed in" was closed...and it all was used again in the scenes depicting that site in the movie.

Yeah - super cool flick. I love the scene where you know they've made it because the lead player has a Jaguar, the rhythm player has a Rickenbacker and the bass player has, uh, either a Fender Jazz bass or a Precision. Also, the bass player's name is never mentioned in the movie and in the creits he's called T.B. Player. I think that's a subtle jab referencing the old joke that nobody ever remembers bass player's names.

Hanks wrote Lovin' You Lots And Lots - that wonderful/horrible Mitch Miller sounding song that opens the movie. He cowrote Mr. Downtown, Hold My Hand - Hold My Heart, My World Is Over and most importantly Voyage Around The Moon. He recreated that mid 60s world with such affection and such accuracy that it has become one of my guilt-free pleasures. I love it. I was in my first bands in that era and i played in Battle of the Bands/ Talent (?) Shows not unlike the one in the movie. My first band - The Nameless - we couldn't think of a name and that sounded sort of mysterious. Our big showstopper (ha ha - we sucked) was going from The Who's Can't Explain right into Just Like Me by Paul Revere and the Raiders so the last chord of the first song was the first chord of the second song. We amazed ourselves (but no one in the audience) with that one.

"The man with the badge in the night.
The man with the badge in the fight"
"What's his name?!?"
"Mister Dowwwntowwwn.
Mister Dowwwntowwwn."
I think the TV show The Wonders play at the end "The Hollywood Television Showcase" is a take off on "The Hollywood Palace" show from the 60s. I remember seeing the Stones on that show and Buffalo Springfield. It was a Saturday night variety show like Ed Sullivan's show but it had a different host every week.

That is definitely one of my favorite movies and they absolutely NAIL the spirit of the time. There is a newer release of the DVD that has a number of added scenes which fill in some gaps and ties up some loose ends.

Did Tom Hanks co-write Voyage Around The Moon?
According to the liner notes of the soundtrack cd: T. Hanks, G. Goetzman and M. Piccirillo.
Incidently, this thread made me pop in the DVD saturday. It really never gets old. ![Very Happy Very Happy](/media/smiley/images/icon_biggrin.gif)

This thread made me actually watch part of the movie last weekend. I don't get it. They sound a lot like the Beatles but this was supposed to be pre-British Invasion? Why is the singer posing like John Lennon?

I guess I missed both of those scenes, but since they copied the Beatles so much it seems a little ridiculous to ask them if they like them. Oh well, it's just a fantasy.

Love that movie.
A lot of it was filmed in the City of Orange, and that's where Kyle Verbtone is from (his parents still live there). When we (The Verbtones) were in there in 2006 we did a walking tour of the main street in the film and stopped in the place where they were having breakfast, the Army Surplus store where the bass player came out of, but couldn't find Patterson's Appliance Store (let it burn, let it burn) or any parking meters to fall over.
Get the recent DVD with the cut out scenes. It's a better movie, AND has lots more Charlize Theron (I like Liv & Rita, but Charlize... hubba hubba!)
